Fee to join 928 register?

ORIGINAL: 928S4racer

Interesting topic, one of the reasons I left PCGB was the 928 register. I asked David Hemmings for some 928 info , he said I couldn't have it as he was gathering it for his 928 book.I asked PCGB about this (surely info gathered from the 928 register belonged to PCGB ?)& was told NO, it belonged to David Hemmings & that the 928 register was nothing to do with PCGB but was David Hemmings's.
This was 5/6 years ago, it was then free to join the 928 register & you got a list of register 928's/owners/locations (years out of date) & photo copies of 928 magazine articles (illegal to reprint without permission ?)

John

I find this confusing.

5/6 Years ago I was the Register Director and this request should have come to me... IT DIDN'T.
My response would have been that as a Member and a 928 owner you have a right to any information that the Club, or it's officials hold on your model. Any refusal by the Register Secretary would be a breach of the trust that the Club, and I as Register Director, place in him.

I would very much like to know who told you that the 928 Register was nothing to do with PCGB.
By that time (2002) the data perotection act was making itself felt and we we having to be careful what information we gave regarding the ownership of specific cars.

Please contact me, either through this forum page or personally at r31@porscheclubgb.com copying Robin Walker at register@porscheclubgb.com This is a serious allegation and we need to get to the bottom of it.

Hi All :)

To all 928 owners and others concerned about this matter, I have now had a response from David Hemmings and have asked "yet again" for a FULL OFFICIAL response from him as Register Secretary to be posted here by myself once it is received from him.

I will post it in full once I have received it....

All the best Brett :)

Hi All :)

Below is the "Official" response from David Hemmings which I received as a word doc as an attachment......

You can make of it what you will and believe it if you wish............

In my opinion he NEEDS SACKING........

Word doc with no alterations in bold >>>>>

" PCGB Forum debate 15.010.07 I have been asked to respond to the complaint that new Register Members must pay £12 to join.
Background
It has always been my view that a Register that consisted only of a printed list of the cars within that register would be pretty boring and unlikely to attract many members. I therefore set about putting this right and the 928 Handbook has grown from a dozen or so pages, and through 15 editions, to the current 200 pages. At some point the Club decided that it could no longer be offered free and it has been charged at cost, that is £12, for the last few years. Today
One or perhaps two people have phoned and said they did not want it so I have been happy to send them just the Register Car Printouts.
Introductory Letter
It is also true that my introductory letter has fallen into the trap of assuming that everyone does want the book, because, even if I say it myself, no other register does it like we do!
Result
I have therefore included a new paragraph, in the introductory letter, that now clearly states a choice of (a) Register printouts of the cars is postage only, or (b) pay £12 for the Handbook, cheques payable to the Club, as they always have been, plus postage stamps.
I hope this now clears up any misunderstanding. I am currently working on Edition 16, to include our 30th year
.

Ummm... Register printout of the cars? Presumably without names and addresses?!

Hi MARK :)

No idea....I am not stupid enough to have paid....and I still cannot get a straight answer..so I have given up....

All the best Brett :)

May I suggest, as a newbie in my second year of PCGB and 928 Register membership, that things are getting a little over the top? As far as I can see David Hemmings has done a good job over the years and he may have made an error in the phrasing of his letter. I did pay and think the book is well worth it (I am glad to hear that a new edition is in the works and hope to get/buy it). Given that the cheques were payable to PCGB what is the problem? Does anyone suggest that David has a PCGB bank account and is planning a splendid retirement in Monaco with the proceeds of the £12 best-seller book? As for the register list - it is quite thorough: contains details of the cars and owners to the extent that owners allow it (i.e.: if you don't want your address listed, it is not). Let's calm down, thank David for the good job he has done and get back to enjoying our cars, the club, etc...

P.S. I must declare my interests: I have met David once (at Ragley Hall) and have talked to him twice on the phone, about my car. He recently did a valuation of my car for insurance purposes (we did not agree as to the value). Most of all I do hope that in the future, whether within the 928 Register or PCGB as a whole, we can disagree less and concentrate on the goals/interests which bring us together in the first place.

There is my 0.2cents....

Would it be possible for the register to save the "book" to pdf and to make it available to PCGB members online?

Hi Alex :)

Good thinking but David Hemmings wouldnt know what a .PDF file was if it bit him :)

As an example he doesnt even know how to read this forum....

All the best Brett :)

So - I was asked to sort this out and have done so.....

The problem was that 928 Register members had to pay a fee to join the Register. Following the work that Robin and I did that has been revised to "you could volunteer to pay".

Personally, I would actually, and slightly reluctantly - lol.... - agree with Brett.

There should be no additional fee to join the Registers. Implied or otherwise. As a suggestion, the 944 register is completely free to join and we will consider 928 owners as a double-member due to the design of your engines!

Hi Paul :)

Thanks for that, particularly the agreement with my opinion lol :)

If we join the 944 Register do we get in free anywhere ??? (As long as its NOT Ragley lol)

All the best Brett :)

p.s....To anyone reading this ...in case of confusion...

This is NOT the 928 Register !!! I would be ashamed if anyone thought so....

This is the PCGB`s 928 Forum (run by me under PCGB direction)

Please do not think we have ANYTHING to do with each other :(

Brett :)
