Fen's ideal car.......... almost!

ORIGINAL: wizard

...................maybe this time a Caymen. To me, it is positioned as the modern 944 and if tweaked can be as good as or better than the 997.

I agree enteriely. The Cayman and GT3 are the only current Porsche that I would consider buying (had I the money). The GT3 is far to brash to use every day, you wouldn't be able to park it anywhere and everyone would want to race you - and if I could afford a GT3 I'd get and AM V8 Vantage anyway. A modified Cayman would be a great Werewolf in dogs clothing.

Fen changes cars faster than I change underpants so what ever it is he gets it is unlikely that most of us will see it before he is on to the next one. [:D]

It's not a Cayman; while I agree in principal with the spiritual successor to the 944 line of thought I have driven one and it was boring. Perhaps if it had boost...

That said though I'm afraid my finances don't stretch to a Cayman, at least not if I intend to get the 944 running again anytime soon and plan to keep the hearse (which I do). For that reason I'm afraid the vacancy looks very likely to be filled by something that sucks.

Technically it will be a return to the dark side from whence I came originally, but as I don't believe I had met any of you when I was last a Sith Lord I left out the return part.

You've not only seen the hearse, you've driven it, and you saw my turbo nutter Roadster. You've even seen my Turbo moving under its own power which is a very rare thing [&o]

Fen - Right, there is enough interest that I think I will make the trip. I also want to pop a bit further east to look at a Carrera 4 oh bum! Can anyone catch that cat; I have abag for it here [;)]

Ah ha, so are we talking 993?

I've looked at a 930, but in common with all the similar age 3.2 cars I have looked at they are rusty, hence ruled out.

I have reluctantly decided to rule out a Turbo 2 on financial grounds (though there is a LHD red one near me that is sensibly priced...), so as I said above I think this one will suck.

Just seen a cat running down the street - do you have the bag for it [;)]

4wd - h'mm did not think that would be your type of thing?

Pete

To be honest I originally thought a 2 would be better, but at least with 4s you don't have to avoid the tiptronics and I believe the flywheel problem was not an issue either?

I haven't looked at nor driven a 4 yet and my indie says don't buy one a they are heavier and less fun, but the extra transmission doesn't go wrong and what I intend to use the car for is a bit of fun on the road (which means not near the limits in any 911) and possibly as a 'Ring toy where 4wd might be a positive advantage for a beginner, so I'm open to the idea.

I'm not sure if I'm open to LHD and I won't entertain cloth seats, white paint (don't think it suits the model at all) or anything other than a metal roof. If it doesn't come on Cup 1's then they will have to be sourced separately.

My ideal I guess is a Slate grey RHD Carrera 2 manual coupe with sports leather and probably air-con, totally standard or retro-fitted with Cup 1's and teardrop mirrors if it didn't have them from new.

I've always thought a 4WD 911 with snow tyres would be great fun in the winter - probably run rings around most "off roaders" especially in the typical 2mm of white stuff that grinds Britain to a halt

Pete

I've always thought that when I get round to scratching my 911 itch i'd go 4wd if I went for a 964 or 2wd for a 993 onwards as I believe it wasn't until the 993 with the introduction of double wishbone rear suspension that Porsche sorted out the handling ills of the 911. So given I don't think crashing into a tree bacwards is much fun (though there are those that would disagree i'm sure) i'd want as much traction as possible in a pre-993.

Fen - i'm surprised you're not going for some sort of RS supersport type model if it's rawness you're after. Leather seats and air con sounds far too sensible given you've got the Hearse as your sensible runaround!

Having had a 3.2 Carrera and a Carrera 3.0 I'm not scared of 2wd handling; it's not half as frightening as people like to make you think, don't back off in a corner just like you wouldn't in a FWD hatch.

I'd actually have another 3.2 Carrera in an instant as they are the last pure 911 in my eyes, but I'm starting to think even those that don't appear rusty just haven't shown up yet so I've stopped looking at them, particularly as many of them are for sale today for more than I paid for the one I used to have in 1994 at a dealer! Similarly I'd have a Carerra RS even quicker, but there is a whole world of difference in price between a Carrera 2 or 4 and an RS so it isn't an option.

I'd like something that is treading the line between the hearse and the Turbo; a bit more fun than the hearse, but not as hardcore as the Turbo with it's bucket seats, solid bushes and mega-heavy steering. I won't let air-con alone sway me on the car I buy, but all else being equal I'd rather have it than not. Leather is a must; even the RS has it.

I'd agree with Fen, I looked at a few 964s before I bought my Turbo. They were 2WD and certainly at road speeds the car handled flawlessly. The 964 has always been one of my favourite shapes in its standard form, but my all time favourite is a 993 with spoilers
