Finally Got To Hoon Around

We have had our 944 for about six weeks now and other than a blast down the M1 it has just been to work and back, all of ten miles a day[:(] When we picked it up the wife drove it back across the moors and grinning like an idiot wouldn't let me near it.

Any yesterday we had a day off and went out into the N.York moors and had a blast. My god what a car, I had no idea what these things are like. I love my 911 and will be buried in it, but these 944s are a complete revelation, it just felt like an extension of me and so easy to drive and the shear joy of sweeping through the bends is mind blowing, and the confidence that the car inspires wow! It was my turn to be grinning like an idiot, and at less than £2K what a complete bargain.

Anyone that says these are not proper Porsches clearly has never driven one

Obviously you guys already know this, but I just had to tell someone that would understand [:D]

Sounds like you had a bit of an epiphany. Welcome to the converted.

Anyone who says these aren't proper Porsches cares more about badges than driving.

it trully is amazing...the handling....the way the wheel conveys feedback......just awesome. I have had mine for a mth....done about 1000 miles....absolutely love it.

Ive had mine for 3 years now and it always puts a smile on my face I think the 944 is vastly underated unless you own one[:)]

For me it's the steering above everything else - particularly on the 2.5 n/a models. I think I enjoyed driving my 924S's more than my turbo on most roads, but it's easy to be seduced by all the turbo torque [:D]

I'm exactly the same. My lux was undoubtably the nicest handling 944 I've owned you can just feel the lightness and the ballance beyond all others (especially when braking), I even prefer the old 80's clocks and reverse rev counter to the more main stream oval dash design but I could never own one again.. once you've tasted the fruit of the dark side that BIG turbo POWWER it just doesn't feel right driving anything else. In fact there is just about nothing (nothing I've ever found anyway) that gives the same feeling as a 944T's turbo delivery once they get to into the 300hp+ range. 6 cylinder turbo's with 400hp+ feel flat in comparison. Too smooth and linear.

Have to diverge on this one - the view in the door mirror of the fat 944/68 rear haunches has to be one of the classic angles in motoring design.

We should make Marks post a sticky on all the other forums and get it reprinted in big bold letters inside a future copy of PP [:D]

Quite a product endorsement ! [:)]

Very true, but the vue of turbo 911 rear in the mirror is also nice. I am trying to get both of my cars together so that the 911 appears in the 944 mirror hopefully getting both rear ends!

Actually I was thinking/planning about putting together a small article for PP, so combined with some nice photos lets see what happens.

Saves me a PM, please do send me something. A few words and a couple of pictures would be great.

As always, if anyone has anything at all that might be of interest please get in touch. The magazine is totally flexible, if there aren't enough interesting "Member" articles then we just get generic new car or archive stuff. Don't feel that you need to be able to write professional journalist stuff, most of the time it's prefectly fine but there are full-time journalists who can edit anything. Even the rubbish I send them! [&o]

SSSh don't tell everyone, we will get pestered to sell ours ! try to get a run in a sorted turbo [;)]

I'll never sell mine Frenchy, I've had it for years and its the best car in the world. I just need to give it some TLC as I've been negligent for a few years then she will look her best again

*nods*

The 924 is the sweetest drive in the entire range. with the 924 Turbo close behind (usually in front actually, as they dont weigh a deal more and theyre just as nice to drive, but theyre faster than most other 4cyl. models).

I absolutely agree.

BUT

I often wish my S2 wasn't a Porsche. It would be just as great a car if it had an "Audi" or "VW" badge on the nose, but wouldn't have the stigma associated with the brand. Parts prices would probably be lower, they may prove cheaper to run, I'm sure they would be cheaper to insure, and when people ask what sort of car you drive, you wouldn't have to say "A tatty old porsche." Saying "A nice old VW sports car" would make you far more friends ....

This could be a bargain...

....for only just more than the price of a full front engine service & waterpump [:D]
