Finito.... 84 pics for your enjoyment - hopefully!

ORIGINAL: robsangster
Sadly she'll be up for sale soon .... as soon as I finish the essay documenting everything that has been done....
...shockingly for less than you can buy a rusty/badly crash repaired, smoking old 911 for on ebay - it's a crime!

Impressive - do please PM me if you really are thinking of selling as I'm looking to 'upgrade'.

Anyone know of any where in the Northants area for plating.

Rich

My parts were all done (several years back) at QED in Aylesbury 01276 426214 - HP19 8DE.
I think they charged around £30 minimum order, but that could be up to a 20kg box of nuts/bolts/small parts as they can all be thrown into a basket together. Things like fuel rails and large brackets can cost extra, as these have to be individually racked.

I have used this Northampton based company before for work projects, although not specifically for yellow zinc passivate.

Excellent quality service, if a little expensive. I think their minimum order was £50 ex vat from memory.

For what its worth, in my experience, the chance of a good finish was improved by the following:
- Sounds obvious, but deliver the parts in a reasonably clean condition. Removal of dirt grease and any thick rust deposits with a wire wheel or similar all helps. Mild surface rust or zinc corrosion is easily removed by the acid bath soak.
- Take care when sending parts that have small cavities where acid could become trapped and inadequately rinsed prior to the final plating stage (i.e. if you send a fuel rail, use bungs to seal the internals). Rubber parts survive the process fine, although if loose or peeling, they can help to trap and retain acid.
- Take care not to include any aluminium parts by mistake - they will return looking like one of those porous foot scrubbing stones and all the remaining parts in that batch will have a dulled-off [&o]

wow that looks fantastic, might be resuming my search for a 944 this year once weather gets better.
what sort of price range would something like that be ??

I would hope that the mint 944 cab sets a precedent. If I owned that car I would want upwards of £6500. Has anyone noticed how many new guests have appeared here lately looking for a nice car but only want to spend peanuts? lets hope this trend soon ends.

There is no way I would ever sell my car for less the £5000. Never !![:'(][][]

You can include me in that, as per the other thread you commented on[:D] I guess when newbies like me need a starting point you trawl through ebay, Piston heads looking at cars and get a feel for what price they're going for. Then you get on a forum such as this one and after talking to people who know what they're on about, realise how much you should REALLY spend on a 944. Needless to say my budget is going up accordingly [;)]

Glad I found this place, everyone has been really helpful and saved me a costly mistake!

Cheers
Andy

When I finally pull my finger out, I will be asking fair money I believe for what is undoubtedly a very well sorted and cared for example. Certainly to buy an ebay cheapy and do what's been done to mine would cost you considerably more.... and if you then had to start on rotten bodywork etc... well!
From my experience from wandering round Silverstone and the like, having a peek at other enthusiasts cars - even some of those were in not too great shape... so hopefully for those of us with a 'keeper' so to speak, it has to be good. I know prices are a popular and common thread, however when you consider whats been happening to 914/928 and even the better condition 924 prices in the last few years..... I would hope the better 944's will not only hold value but possibly rise. Compared to an early Boxster, I'd keep the S2 every time!

I had a '91 S4 928 that I sold some time ago - in similar condition to the 944 in this thread, its interesting to note that the same car now would definitely command at least 4k more than I sold it for - and to be honest despite looking regularly, I've yet to see one a patch on the beast I sold... honest!
Going back to the ebay cheapies..... after 20 years of Porsche ownership (pretty much everything bar a 968) , I've yet to find anything cheap that doesn't hide a very good reason for being so!

Im aware of a chap who is (was!) rather chuffed at recently purchased a running 6k 911 SC off said auction site, shame the works required to pass the next MOT are estimated at in-excess of 5k....... and to think, he could have bought a nice white S2 Cab in great nick and had 4K change! ha ha ha.....!
