First Porsche - 944 Turbo!

Hi Guys!!

Just wanted to say hello and that I bought my first Porsche a few weeks ago [:)] Its a J reg 944 Turbo in black. Will post some photos soon.

Recently had some work done at GT One - cambelt, water pump, engine mounts, brake hoses plus some other bits and pieces. They were a pleasure to deal with, real enthusiasts and they helped me with lots of advice in terms of identifying the important things that needed doing.

Also, have to say this forum is great - its really active, found loads of good info that has already been helpful, e.g. classic car insurance and ownership experiences.

I'm not really mechanically minded so will not be attempting any major jobs myself. But thanks to the info on this forum, things I am willing to attempt are the common 944 issues of where the fan only works on setting 4 and the heater being permanently on!! I'll let you know how I get on.

In terms of plans for the car, I am going to keep it in standard trim for now and just enjoy driving it on weekend A and B road blasts.

Cheers,
Rohan

Hi Rohan,Nice choice of car!!Enjoy yourself ,be carefull out there when it gets slippy though!!!!
MarkK
PS Now go and get it remapped then DPW,MBC or maybe a EBC...!???!![:D]

Then get the Geometry tweaked to enhance the front end turn in and reduce understeer..

If you really want to upset Scotty, go and buy some clear front indicator lenses...[;)][:D][:D]

Enjoy, superb car. Need to see some pics[8|]

Yes thats what all Turbo owners think to begin with, but the pull of the Darkside is too strong ! [;)]

Welcome, am sure you will love the car and as everyone knows black Turbos are the fastest. [:D]

Re my comment on standard trim, had actually meant engine wise. The car is on Boxster alloys - sorry sc0tty!!

MarkK - Being a bit of a dufus I have no idea what DPW,MBC and EBC means [&:]

Next year, I would like to track the car - have no experience on trackdays (only on Forza 3 [:(] ), so I guess that's what will kick start the quest for more power. When that happens, I will have to get your recommendations...

In the meantime, I am just loving the handling and turbo boost. Never had a turbo car before and the handling balance is on another level from my daily driver (BMW E36 328).

Erm, funny you should mention that but that is probably the one cosmetic thing I was looking at doing!! Well, that and cup mirrors. Damn so much for keeping it relatively standard...

DPW = Dual Port Wastegate - helps with more efficient and accurate control of boost
MBC = Manual Boost Controller - a knob connected to the DPW with silicone hoses that can control the point at which the DPW opens to bleed off excess boost and thus increase or decrease the max boost of the engine and hence the power/torque.
EBC = Electronic Boost Controller - more sophisticated, accurate and expensive (!) version of the MBC!

Welcome on board Rohan, congrats on the new purchase [:)]

The fan setting problem will be a good 'first fix' for you to tackle. The new rheostats are around ÂŁ20 from breakers. Porschapart know all about the problem and had plenty in stock when mine went

Welcome!

Enjoy the car!

Bet you drive it nearly all the time soon though! They are such a useable everyday car and far more fun than just a "box" as it were!

Congrats for the purchase, wishing you many troublefree miles with it.

Try to avoid the "what to do to go faster" threads, they often make turbo owners wallet-aching and addicted [:)]

Appreciate the warm welcome guys. Am happy to know that I can get advice from 944 experts when I have any queries on my 944 ownership. [:D]

appletonn - thanks for clearing up those acronyms, there is so much to learn...

Diver944 - great tip, will call Porscheapart.

Oh yes :rolleyes:, but so much fun too!![;)]

I still miss the boost kick from mine [X(]

Welcome to the roller coaster of 944 ownership Rohan. I am sure you won't be disappointed though. Will amplify most that everyone else has said and give you six mnths before you are looking for chips, dual port wastegate and boost controller [:D][:D][:D] Talking of boost watch it on those wet roundabouts. It has a habbit of creeping up on you when you least expect it!!!!

Welcome Rohan

Good choice [:D][:D][:D]

Please spend some money on some tweaks to make us that have started rolling down that slippery slope feel better [;)]

I am trying hard to stop, but once you "pop" you can't stop!!!

Nice one Rowan, you have taken the same route into first porsche Ownership as I, although mine has already has had some tweakerage (Boost enhancer, dump valve & promax airfilter) and is in the fastest colour of them all (almost red)

I can feel my resolve for no mods slipping and once the basics are sorted the thread on Turbo suspension has got me thinking.....

I have to say I didn't know that. Black turbos are the fastest. Hmm. Faster than red turbos, or white turbos then?

I wonder how the performance stacks up in different colours amongst S2's. Are black S2's faster than other colours?

(I'm not going to point out the obvious that all S2's are faster than turbos. That goes without saying. [;)] )

Fat Albert is correct red turbos are indeed faster. It also follows that the redder they are then the faster they are [:D] Mmm quite a bold statement to say all S2s are faster than turbos. Sounds like a gauntlet lol.

Rob,

The truth is often inflammatory ... [:D]

(I'm only doing it to wind Nick up. He always bites ... just you wait and see ... )

There is one way to stop rolling - It's a bit drastic though (not sure I'm quite reconciled to life without the 944 yet [:D])
