First Porsche Advice Required Please?

If the price is right, I'm sure my better half will sell her Supersport.. She hasn't bought a new car for over 6 months now so is getting a few withdrawal symptoms... and looking for an excuse to get a Honda S2000 or Civic Type R [:(]

Hi Digger

I found myself in your position last year having spent years running 50's & 60's classics which didn't get used in the wet.... so hardly at all some years.

New little or nothing about the marque and was really looking for an older car (pre-impact bumper). Did some research, spoke to dealers and eventually settled on finding a 3.2, as I wanted to drive the thing not store it for 6 months of the year.

Armed with Peter Morgan's "Ultimate Buyers Guide" (very good aside from the oil pressure comments), set about finding a good one.

Drove the 915 boxes... didn't feel right (though in fairness I could have been brainwashed by this time), so narrowed things down to '87-'89 with the G50.

Looked everywhere, dealers, mags, Internet. Found plenty, looked at as many as I could. All seemed to have the same problems (little or much). Rust bubbles under the lights, Fading paintwork (so called guards red/pink), patchy service history etc etc. Just kept faith that something would turn up.

Eventually found one on e-bay 1987 Targa in Black. Phoned up the guy, went and had a look and walked away to think.

Came back and did a handshake deal subject to me inspecting the thing more closely.

Went back again and spent a whole Saturday going over the car to find faults. Used the ones I found to negotiate down the price. (o/s electric window didn't work saved me £500 and only cost £200 to fix).

The car had a full service history, engine rebuild, Porsche specialist respray with work documented, complete new rubber trims all-round by the previous owner. A fortune spent. All MOT's to prove mileage, which was by then 136k, but as everybody had told me "buy on condition not mileage".

So wrote out the cheque and picked up the car a week later. Saved myself a couple of grand for doing some of the things I had found, which I am slowly getting done.

Joined the PCGB and attended the regional meetings (R24). A great bunch of people....mad....but great! Picked up some great contacts for doing some of the little things that needed doing.

The moral...well I suppose just talk to as many people as possible, look at as many as you can, drive as many as you can and keep an open mind. I looked at cabs, coupes and targas, both Supersports and narrow bodies.

If you look at enough you will get a feeling of what's right and what not. Bear in mind that these cars are 15-17 years old. There will be things that need doing; just budget for them in the deal and if you're in any doubt ...walk away.

Hope this is of help.

Good luck and good hunting.

Twinny
