Absolutely, and I agree with you that us experienced tinkerers can get away with the "between the thumb and forefinger, and twist technique". Personally I use 100 degrees because I used to find that tensioining the belt for a 90 degree twist made it too tight, and made it sound like a badly seviced Vauxhall Cavalier, (allegedly)
I was thrown it at the deep end on a 944. Long story. Whilst repairing the Cat C 924T known as the ebay special, someone kept pestering me to have a look at his friend's 944 with bad body damage. We repaired it after a fashion, then he blew the head gasket. I said I wouldn't do it for less than £150 and the sod agreed. Refitting the belts wasn't half as bad as people would have you believe. The belt on the 944, S & S2 have the same part number, as the inlet cam is driven internally by the exhaust cam via a short chain.
