Absolutely, and I agree with you that us experienced tinkerers can get away with the "between the thumb and forefinger, and twist technique". Personally I use 100 degrees because I used to find that tensioining the belt for a 90 degree twist made it too tight, and made it sound like a badly seviced Vauxhall Cavalier, (allegedly)

I was thrown it at the deep end on a 944. Long story. Whilst repairing the Cat C 924T known as the ebay special, someone kept pestering me to have a look at his friend's 944 with bad body damage. We repaired it after a fashion, then he blew the head gasket. I said I wouldn't do it for less than £150 and the sod agreed. Refitting the belts wasn't half as bad as people would have you believe. The belt on the 944, S & S2 have the same part number, as the inlet cam is driven internally by the exhaust cam via a short chain.

When I mentioned the belts on a 944S I was refering to the set including balance shafts and steering pump. After all theres no point in doing half a job.

If you are doing 944 head gaskets for £150 where does the queue start? I can see a fortune to be made with you as a subcontractor[;)]

So basically there's noreal proper answer, I did look at 1 today a 924 2 litre which was up for £1700, it had had a bare metal respray but there was rust on the roof gutter?! Only a tiny bit but i'm sure if it had been bare metaled properly all the rust should have been ground out and (hopefully) done with lead (hate filler, it's evil!)

A 924 (1979 onwards) has a hot dip galvanised body. A car with a bare metal respray HAD a galvanised body.
Ever wondered why you seldom see a rusty 924? My reasoning is that because of their relatively low value restorers don't bother to do a 'down to bare metal job' therefor the galvanising remains mainly intact.

Never buy 'New paint' you don't know whats under it. Buy a car that has had the paint on for at least a couple of years. Paint can hide a multitude of sins.

Plus parts, and it was a one off. I don't wan't to earn a living doing it. I said 150 to put him off.

Bad move. The best price that I can get for that is £400, just head and £600 with belt change. That IS plus parts.
