Hello everyone, I'm just starting out on the search for a 944 S2, sub £4K. the search begins tomorrow with this:

PORSCHE 944 S2 FH 2+2 , 2 Doors, Manual, Cabriolet, Petrol, 1990 G Reg , 161,252 miles, Black. H P I clear, Full Service History. Lots of bills, 2 Owners from new. ( 6 months Warrenty - Parts and Labour ) All dealer facilites avaliable. £2,995 p/x welcome.

High mileage i know, but i am told it has all the necessary work has been done to belts and water pumps last november and all receipts are present. Will be testing out a few in the next few weeks, but it would good to pick the brains of this forum on what I can expect from taking on a 944 with this many miles on the clock.

many thanks.

That's amazingly cheap! - look out for rot in the wings & sills & make sure there's a good warranty [:D]

The mileage isn't a worry - do your research on camshafts, chains & tensioners though

The mileage isn't a problem if it's been maintained properly but I echo Ed when he says to check the sills and ask about the camchain, not the belts that everyone knows about but the chain that is inside the cam box.

That is dirt cheap for a Cabrio - check it over very carefully

I would suggest you take a 944 inspection check list with you and go through it and tick every box. It will give each car a thorough check and give you a good comparison to compare and assess differant cars you have viewed.
lots of links on here to various guides and checklists
oh and welcome to the forums [;)]

Welcome to the forum herbie75, as everyone has already said the best tool you can take with you is a check list or buyers guide, but just because its cheap it might not be a nail, a guy i know paid around 2500 for a j reg s2 late last year and that was from dealer, yes it needs a little tlc but in princible its a good solid car ...only wish i got mine that cheap ![:)] Good luck with your search...

Thanks for the replies. Just to confirm it isn't a cabrio, i hadn't even noticed that in the ad as i just looked at the photos....it's definitely got a roof!

I'm trying to draw up a list from stuff i have found on this site, but on the sticky thread for the buying guide none of the links seem to work. i've got hold of the 2 pdf's articles from 911 & Porsche World and GT Purely Porsche, but any other buying guides would be a help. i've tried to insert picture, but it doesn't seem to work....will try again:

Don't worry about the pictures not working - there is a general problem with this on all the forums until next week.

Hi Herbie,

Did you go and view that car as I was quite interested in it? What was it like?

Cheers,
Dario

Hi, yes i did see it. Don't think it was for me. Its cheap, but it very tatty inside and out had quite a few things that would need doing to it. I think you would need to spend about £2K straight off to sort it out. The other concern was the mileage which just didn't stack up. In the last 7 years it had done 14k miles. I know this is plausible, but to me it had either been clocked or it had sat still for much of its recent life either way I didn't get the feeling that it had been looked after. Gut feeling was to walk away...which i did.

On to the next one....

Drat - those links were first used back in 2004 but it looks like the pages don't exist anymore.

There are currently guides on:

www.clarks-garage.com
www.hartech.org.uk
www.944turbo.org.uk

There have also been quite a few guides over the years in back copies of 911&Porsche World and GT Purely Porsche

Copies of most of the magazine guides and road tests are available for download here:

http://www.cannell.co.uk/Road%20Tests.htm

There are some really good technical articles too.

Hi Herbie,

I've just put my 1990 S2 up for (reluctant) sale. Good sound condition, 98k genuine miles, well maintained. Within your budget I hope as I'm asking a very fair £3695 - I need the space and the boss indoors won't let me keep two cars!

Further details and pics can be found here - http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/451391.htm

Drop me a line if you're interested.

I have sent you a PM as email forwarding doesn't seem to be working through the forum at present.

There is, indeed, a problem with the e-mail within the forum. Don't rely on it at the moment! []

Hi mate and welcome. What year is your car because 14% error seems rather large to me to be just worn tyres. The rolling circumfrence doesn't change that much from new to worn. Are they the correct size i.e. the correct combination of rim size and tyre wall height? The reason I ask about age is because it could be a dodgy speedo pick up. Later cars are driven from the gearbox electronicly and earlier cars are of the wind up variety I believe.

Thanks for your quick response Rob.

The car is a '91 S2 with 16" D90 wheels and 225/50's on the rear. I have actually calculated what the speed should be according to the final drive/5th gear ratios and tyre sizes and allowing for the amount of wear on the tyres the speedo reading is still very high.
