First Road Going 944

There were a lot of Clio 182's and other a hot hatch stuff which I expected to be moving over for a lot"¦not so the 944 was every bit as quick down the straits, had more traction out of the tight corners and could carry more speed into corners"¦There was also a Nissan 200sx (s13) running 300bhp with coilover suspension, Quaif atb diff, decent brackes, down the straight he could pull 6-7 car lengths but round the twisties the 944 reeled it all back in"¦.
Couple of little niggles, the brake pedal is long, (think it's the master cylinder tired).
The oil gauge now reads permanently over 5 bar(faulty sender).
It over heated, think this was due to the system not being fully bled through, as after the car cooled down it took nearly 5 litres of water, drove home no problems, temp gauge just above the quarter, no water in the oil etc.
Not bad for a 25year old car with 284k miles....
So before the next track day the plan is to fix the above, fit the 25.5mm rear torsion bars, rear axle mount/swing arm bushes, front caster bush and front arm bush, lower ride height by about an inch all round and buy a pair of rear wheels to fit to the front with the same size tyre all round and if I get time fit the Sabelt seats and harnesses"¦.
Eldavo, it was a silver wagon, usual Scooby owner crap, "my Scooby was quicker than the 944"¦blah blah"¦." After tonight I'm well looking forward to seeing how a 944 goes with 300bhp"¦
Mick"¦.The quick shifter was very good, if your any good with the spanners should only take about an hour to fit.

The RS4 was very badly driven, the blue Astra was much quicker than him - as it should be, it had 520bhp!
My car is off the road for a couple of weeks while I fit a second factory oil cooler and replace the power steering pump - threw the belt at the start of the trackday as the pump had a knackered thread. When it's sorted I'll pop over.

Probably this guy that I let past just after the 9 minute mark and no doubt tweaked heavily as most Scoobys are.

Yes that's him, I think its his brother in the RS4...more money than talent, agree with your comment regards modern performance cars and the electronics compensating for poor driving...one of my reasons for wanting the 944.
No problem pop over when your sorted....i'm working the next couple of weekends and then away on holiday, so not much will get done on my car either..

Tony - thanks, sounds like you had a good day! I'll be fitting an Only944 Quickshift before I venture on track next time. Also please let us know how you get on with changing the master cylinder - mine has a bit more pedal travel than I would like as well!
Keep up the good work!

The 2.7 overheated on me once dumped lots of water then never did it again. There was something about the cap I remember, was going to change it but forgot, maybe two years ago.
cheers Mike....I will change the cap....don't think there is any damage as temp stayed steady all the way home
Mick B, I should have said earlier, you should also change the shift linkage arm, there is loads of slop in the standard part.
I had intended to fit the bigger torsion bars and uprated bushes to the rear beam however due to several bolts being seized in the alloy mount decided to put off until and just refurb the beam I have in the Turbo.
I had also done a compression check, checked all hoses looking for why the car had over heated last time out, also gave the car a run up and down a local dual carriage way, in 3rd gear to try and replicate some high revs track driving, could not get the temp to budge over half.
Needles to say within the first 15 mins on track the temp gauge was heading above the 3/4 mark!!!!
After cooling it took nearly 3 ltrs of water, there is no evidence of a leak anywhere, even in the footwell's.
Went out again and managed about 20 mins before the temp gauge started heading north again, so decided better to retreat while I was still able to drive the car home.
Car drove home no problems temp gauge steady at 1/3. Once back at the workshop I pulled the plugs, number 1 was a light brown colour, the remaining 3 looked like they had just been dropped in, no deposits what so ever, my conclusion is the head gasket.
quick pic of on track -
The reason for not putting any more effort into the 2.7 is I have gotten out of it what I required, YES 944's are incredibly entertain cars on the track, and not too bad on the road, and the view out the drivers mirror over the rear wheel arch, love flares!!!!!
I also stripped the damaged 87 Turbo this weekend, that I have had tucked away and have decided to concentrate my efforts into building a light weight track focussed 944, which was always the intention. Not going to be a show car that I will be scared of damaging, but a tidy well handling, reliable turbo'd 944.
At the star of this thread I stated I had purchased an early (Series 1) non sunroof car with no rust in the vulnerable areas and the plan was to use this to build my light weight turbo, after stripping the Turbo and the time scale I want to be back doing track days the series one is going to require to many alterations. I know a few said using a series one was the wrong way to go, and for the timescale I have set they are right'.
I have therefore purchased another rust free non sunroof donor, this time a series two, should be arriving back end of this week.
If anyone wants Parts from the 2.7 let me know, engine is very strong pulls well to the red line, could do with the head gasket replacing which I can do if required, oil is amazingly clean, would make a good base for a large bore turbo (not the route I want to go down), Gearbox is good, torque tube noisy, all electrics work, front wings shot, box sill covers(dread to think what's behind), brake calliper's all been cleaned and sliders greased etc.
Over the past 12 month I have also purchased several 944's with an eye to acquiring parts for the car I want to build, so alongside breaking the 2.7, I have x2 series ones, a series 2 lux, minor parts from the turbo.
I can also get parts blasted and coated if required, as my mate owns a blasting company, torque tubes, cross members, lower arms etc
Located in the north east, and would prefer pickup and cash for parts, that way u can see what your buying, send me a PM if you want parts.
RIP 2.7"¦..Roll on the TURBO"¦..
