First service

I have to thank all who have posted servicing tips on this forum over the past year as I had to take my Boxster MY03 2.7 for it's 1st service Friday last week to Carrs of Exeter OPC. The car had covered 9K miles so quick 1hr job out of the question.

However, I bought my own oil for about £60 9Ltrs Mobil 1, presented my PCGB membership card on arrival and collected later that day with the car being fully valeted and the use of a fully loaded BMW 330d sport for the day.

The cost...

£166

Not bad I thought.

I've used Reading for servicing. They've accepted my Mobil 1 and have also given a discount, atleast so far they have.

OPC Swindon had no problem with me supplying my own oil.

I also do an interim engine oil & filter change myself.

You can get Mobil 1 0/40W in Costco for £23.48 for 4 ltrs so a big saving on the OPC and they also must buy in bulk

Why don't you phone OPC in Edinburgh and see what they say? Your car is relatively new and clearly you want to maintain the warranty so you will want your service at OPC. I service my own now as I cannot be bothered to take it to the dealers or independents.
So far done: Brake fluid change, transmission oil change, distributor caps and rotors renewed, spark plugs changed, engine oil and filters chaged, pollen filters and air filter changed.

Brian, my experience in recent years about own oil has been Aberdeen said no and Edinburgh said ok, so the latter got the service. I've only used Edinburgh once but so far prefer them to Aberdeen and much prefer them to Glasgow, who, frankly, I wouldn't trust further than I could throw them.
BTW, I thought that you didn't have to get your car serviced at an OPC anymore to maintain warranty, but please correct me if I am wrong.

You don't need to get your car serviced at an OPC for warranty purposes, but the service does have to be done according to the schedule with parts of equivalent quality. The EU have dealt with that - good for something then. I suspect most indis still use Porsche parts anyway, so the main saving is probably in labour charges and the benefit from experience is in customer service!

I used Aberdeen and didn't even ask if I could use my own oil, it was there so they used it and they didn't complain either. I had an issue with them when the car was new but since then they've been fine with me. Mind you I've just found I've got their ex Head Tech living just a few miles from me, so guess where I'll be going in future.

I would be interested to hear about the brake fluid. We have an Avensis that is 6 years old and has never had the brake fluid changed. The dealer just tests it each year.

I believe you can take you own oil and save about £120.

Are you extending the warranty? If yes then you are snookered into having the brake fluid done. And indi will do it for ~£50. most opcs will allow you to take your own oil which should save you £40-50 if you buy it from costco or opie oils, and don't forget your pcgb discount too.

I think I paid about £360 for my first service and brake fluid change, supplying my own oil.

I don't think I've ever had a car where the brake fluid wasn't changed every 2 years...

Surprised to hear other makes don't - even our FIAT does.

Secondly, my phone (SIM card PCM) has developed a fault whereby it 'initialises' every time the car is used which means that it annoyingly cuts out the stereo.
Is this a known fault or do I just buy a new SIM card?
Thanks

Try a different SIM first, then if no joy a tactical visit to your OPC before your warranty expires.

Brake fluid on all cars have to be changed every two years or when boiling piont reaches 150c.New fluid is 270c most garages should have a tool for checking this.i recomend changing at 190c

Which surprised me. I had an AX GT many years ago. It did about 7k per year so the dealer only ever did a minor service. As a result brake fluid was not changed for 6 years. This was in the day when they never bothered to "remind" you what other services they offered. When it was finally changed a "black" fluid came out!! But, even more serious, and costly, was that the brake master cylinder seals were shot and I needed a new cylinder. I found this out coming off the M3 and having to pump the pedal a number of times to get any pressure to be able to stop. Total cost about £600.

Hence, I now always ask the garage about changing the fluid on my cars every 2 years But, Toyota say they test the fluid every year and it is still OK.

Thanks, I managed to get a 10% PCGB discount on the £460 cost of what is really a very expensive oil change!
OPC charges £15 a litre for Mobil 1 0W-40 which is about £50 more than ebay for 8 litres needed.
As suggested, I am going to ask them to test the brake fluid, before they change it for £120 or take it to indy who charges £85.

I recently had my Boxster serviced at OPC Cambridge and got charged considerably less than £120 for the fluid change, my car has only done 26000 at 4 yrs old. Talk to your OPC and ask for a better deal, they may just need your business rather than see it go down the road to an Indy.

I did have a fair amount of other work done at the same time as it was a 40000 mile service, so that probaly helped [:)]

Thanks Keith.
I bought my car from Richard Ennifer at OPC Cambridge and they are really great, but I live too far away for a service.
OPC Bournemouth are better than they were before the credit crunch, but they don't really like negotiating!
BTW I fixed the phone inititalisation problem by inserting another SIM card a couple of times and now it works fine with the original SIM card.
Must have been a glitch somewhere.

Great service from OPC Bournemouth and a PCGB discount of 10% on everything.
Supplied my own Mobil 1 0/40 and the service cost is £280, plus the oil £60, instead of £480.
Asked them to test the brake fluid instead of just changing it and I have an invoice that shows it has 0%; yes nought, water content.
So it is possible to service this car at a sensible cost.[:D]

I never knew you could take in your own oil. I was quoted £360 and £120 for the service and brake fluid change. My local well known indy (Hartech in Bolton) will do the whole lot for £335.

May be I need to negotiate with the OPC.
