Fixing a couple of little oil leaks

Few days ago i took my car to OPC Leicester with a 4wd light/abs light fault and whilst it was in we were talking about a couple of oil leaks on the engine, one had got to the point where something needed to be done.....

After some investigation the leak was traced to where the barrel (x6) bolts onto the main part of the engine, one was quite bad,a little head scratching later and some getting used to the idea that a fair sized bill was coming my way i agreed for the engine to come out.. OPCs get a lot of stick on forums but all i will say is that these guys have the feel of specialists and they were genuinely sympathetic to my position and a very fair time estimate was done, and because its an older car they are doing it at a favourable labour rate....The guy that is doing the strip is very methodical, and didn't mind me watch him strip the engine down for 10 mins this afternoon. The engine is still quite low milage wise so in order to keep costs as low as possible its basicaly having a re-seal of bits that need it.The main culprits are the six round gaskets that attach to the main case, they were brittle and in some cases broken. My expectations are realistic and i realise it will probably need a full strip and rebuild later on in its life but it gets used fairly lightly so i am hoping this will keep it rolling for a little while yet, with less oil needing to be washed off my undertray at service time....

As it is reassembled i will pop back to OPC Leicester (top bunch of people) and take some pics and if there are any major items that need to be swapped i will spill the beans,I really love old Porsches but this car is testing me and the mrs at the minute it very nearly got chopped in for a Clio cup, really hope this is it for a while or i reckon it will be time for some va va voom...[]

Don't forget the depreciation on a Clio over the next few years will pay for most of your rebuild and the 964 may well appreciate. Stick with it Mark, you know you want to. C'mon guys, give him some moral support, sounds like he needs it!

Nice words Colin [:)] We all question our sanity at times when faced with the big bills. I'm sure your Mrs will understand if you get her involved. Encourage her to drive it once in a while and to love it. I'll bet she secretly enjoys the admiring glances it gets from people you pass on the street. I know my Mrs does. We know both regard it to be a member of the family and that it needs a bit of TLC as it gets older. Keep the faith [8D]

Actually its pretty much the other way round!,the C4 is mostly her car !and she lets me drive it when i'm good....,our kids go to school in it most days which is a bit different to the usual stuff at picking up time[:)]. P.S Thanks for the words of encouragement[:)]

Great to hear that you are happy with the OPC and more so with the guy working on your car. Having confidence in the mechanic will sure help ease the thought of the bill. I'm sure once you drive her from the garage you will be chuffed to bits, money well spent [;)]

I'll be watching this with interest as mine has developed a similar problem , with an expensive house move on the cards I neither want too,or can really afford to spend Ă‚ÂŁ6-8k rebuilding the engine. As my car is lightly used I was thinking of taking a similar route with replacing the seals to cure the drips to prolong the life until I feel I need to investigate further. The car has just turned over the 100,000 mile mark and does go very well, I'm sure that the rest of the engine must still be in good shape, after all my 99' Vectra SRi daily drive has done 110,000 and drives really well if not a little slow compared to the 964 !!! So I'm hoping that there is plenty left in the 964. I'll be interested to see how the job goes and what it costs, Steve

Just Popped in to the OPC and went over the parts bill..,even with good prices i was stunned at how it adds up[&o]Large items include - large bumper/ exhaust heat sheild at the back which looks really crabby on mine plus i have decided to swap, one of the pipe(l/h) looking shock absorbers for the rear bumper, new piston rings, lower timing chain covers (even with new gaskets they will leak in their present condition)plus whilst we have it all apart i am swapping the rear shocks in the suspension for new standard items (they are original on the car and have been subject to 20 years of wear and heat.Fronts will get changed later when i have recovered from the shock of all this.Should all be arriving in the next couple of days..then its reassembly time..

Piston rings??!!! Didn't realise that you were going that far Mark?![:(]

Yup,they wanted to change them[:(]Engine needs to be "run in" for a 1000 miles, then drop the oil, tons of new parts some of the engine tinware looked terrible and needed to be swapped it all adds up like you would not believe.......$$$[:(]The timing chain covers- the lower ones were shot and even with new gaskets would have leaked needed two of those big bucks..It should be in tommorow and fired up...[:D]

Its been fired up and driven and so far its dry, they are keeping it till friday and then she is coming home[:)]

Its completed, and tested, and cleaned just need to pick it up probably on monday, bone dry for now anyway!

Mark, Pleased to read that your all up and running, are there any noticeable improvements apart from now being free from leaks ? Any chance now the job is completed of a breakdown of parts used and approximate costs please ? Regards Steve

I havn't driven it yet,its still at OPC Leicester they have done a few 20-30 mile trips in it,they said it fires up and runs perfectly but i will know on monday myself as i will pick it up then....!They had it stripped right down to the bones,i had never really seen an aircooled engine in peices so its less of a mystery to me now,it was 2.5k in parts(club discount) including engine cam chain covers,gaskets-lots,bolts etc, piston rings, rear dampers, lots of tinware icluding the big heatsheild at the back, the damper for rear bumper plus stuff i have must have forgot...about 40hours or so of labour at a special rate..It has to go back in 500-600 miles for an oil and filter.Definetly worth talking to them if you are local or localish.

Reading between the lines & making assumptions about the labour rates, it sounds like about averageish for a complete rebuild. Hope everything goes well from now on...
