'Flamingeye' LED Dash illumination kit

Below is an x-post that I put on Titanic.

It is a brief review of Darren's (Flamingeye) LED illumination kit for 944 instrument clusters.

I've now installed kits in both my 944's and you can see them at Jamsport on Saturday. Darren will be there with some different colour kits as well.

It's not often that something REALLY useful and well made comes along from a UK source for the 944, so this has really impressed me !

On another modification front, I have now fitted the 'Flamingeye' LED illumination kit to the instrument cluster. Again, last night was the first proper test.

For those who don't know about this kit (on the 944 section of the PCGB forum and built by Darren / Flamingeye), it replaces the 3 plastic bits and bulbs that illuminate the main instrument cluster at night. Both my 944's have suffered dull illumination over the years. The original plastic parts are vacuum coated with a silver covering to help transmit more light betwen the bulb and the gauges, but over time the plastic begins to crack and yellow, and become much less efficient etc. leading to dull illumination. I had modified both mine by fitting brighter (5w) bulbs and trying to repair the silver coating. Although this had improved things, the bulbs started to go intermittent and the end result was never as good as on a 'modern' car.

Enter the flamingeye kit. This is produced to an exceptionally high quality. It comprises new illuminators and cables. You remove the original 'triangular' silver covered plastic parts. I did this by prising out from under the melted plastic rivets with a small screwdriver. The original parts will then come away cleanly. Ther 3 new moulded modules are then fitted in their places, and held firmly by the double sided tape that is already cut to shape and stuck to the modules. Couldn't be easier !

The new modules contain their own illumination in the form of an array of LED's that are available in a number of colours, and can be specified when you order the kit. I bought a 'neon' blue kit with high UV content. I have seen some of the other colours as well - including red.

To power these LED's, each module has a short trailing cable. The kit is supplied with bayonet adaptors that replace the original bulbs (to get the power from the circuit board), that connect to the trailing cables. That's all there is to installation - except obviously for removing and refitting the instrument cluster. TIP - get a removable steering wheel !!

In use the entire instrument display is so much clearer. The LED's give an extremely uniform 'glow' of light that almost makes the gauges appear to be backlit. The UV content maked the red needles glow. There is no mistaking the clearer display. The instrument cluster now looks like it was designed and built yesterday !

A gathering around the car at R11 last night in the dark bought about universal acclaim (even from some 996 / boxter drivers) about how clear / modern the new display was. John Simms was last seen looking for some Kleenex LMAO.

A very worthwhile modification to any 944 owner. No, I'm not on commission, just extremely impressed by the quality and presentation of the kit, and pleased to have solved a long term 'niggle' with my 944's.

** Update ** John Sims has ordered a set as well ....

Rick.

Edited by John Sims to spell name correctly - and because I can, might just as well do something as a Moderator. [;)]

I'll be having a close look at these when we're at Jamsport on Saturday. My Turbo illumination is much dimmer than the S2 and I've just received an entire new dashboard(as mine has the dreaded splits []) so I might as well do both jobs at once

...and I'm very excited about them. The dark blue does look the dogs doobries.

Mine arrived this morning - all I need to do now is get round to fitting them.

The packaging is very professional, and if the fitting of the product is anything like the first impressions it should be great.

OK, I could be up for a set, but one question... can the illumination of the heater controls be modified to match?

Thanks for the write up Rick, you've given me alot to live up to! Gulp![8|]
Fen, that was the next thing I was going to have a look at on mine. You could as Rick suggests dip them.

Installed mine this evening and have just been out to look at them in the dark. Wow!

For those thinking of embarking on the journey towards dashboard lights worthy of the 21st Century a word of caution - RFI. Read the Flamin' Instructions!

Guess who phoned Flamingeye this evening when one of the LED arrays didn't work. Guess who had wasted a good half hour cutting back otherwise nicely soldered and heat shrunk connections testing for continuity. Guess who had connected, disconnected, reconnected and connected again his dash pod culminating with dismantling the offending non-illuminating array.

Guess who thought he had swapped the polarity of the non-illuminating array but hadn't.

Sorry for the disturbance Flamin'. [&o] As my Grand Father used to say - "If all else fails, read the instructions."

John, wood's one thing, but electricity .....

Well there you have it. You can trust wood. Wood has grown as the Good Lord intended it, was He not a carpenter himself.

Now electrikery, that is the work of the Devil and LED's doubly so.

"It only takes 15 minutes to fit" says Rick. I'm sure it would if you spent half an hour digesting the instructions before hand.... that is assuming you are not in league with the Devil and know of his ways.

'Tis easy to laugh and I only make these observations as a reminder to those who may follow. I knew what I was doing really I just thought, as a Beta tester, that I should endeavour to act thick and see what happens. This all being the case, I think Flamin's kit stood up very well.

I guess, but my dash isn't dim at all and I already have to have it really bright to be able to see the heater controls, so dipping the bulbs in blue would just make that worse. I only want the illumination kit to match the stereo, so I really need the heater to be blue as well. I can wait but if you get a solution to brighten the heater in blue then I'm definitely up for a kit.

Talking to Flamin' last night, I understand that he can adjust the brightness of the pod arrays at build stage. This being the case you could have a less bright pod allowing you to turn up the dash light control full (11 - ref Spinal Tap) to give full illumination from the lesser controls.

Flamin' has said that he will adjust my arrays if they are too bright.

I had a skim through the Maplin on-line catalogue to see if I could find anyLED's to install in my boost gauge to provide a matching blue light. Guess what, LED's are generally 5v not 12v. There is a reasonable sellection on red, orange and green LED's in 12v but the only 12v blue I could find was a flashing LED. []

Halfords do three blue 12V LEDs in a blister pack, for the Max Power brigade, at about £5. Could be the solution we are after but they had sold out of blue - plenty of red and green though.

I had thought about going for red with my dash pod, to match my radio, but the UV in the blue really brings the orange needles and warning sections to life. It also seems to make the warning lights shine brighter and clearer with better contrast, but then perhaps that is due to me giving the pod a good cleaning whilst it was out of the dash. [8|]

Fen, one solution would be to change your stereo![:D]
I'm going to get round to pulling my dash apart soon, again....!

Actually I want to replace it with a Pioneer that lights up yellowy-white, but I have loads else to spend my money on just now and the one I have has DAB, MP3, CD etc. When I do change it the current one will go in the Turbo.

Sounds disgusting - a radio that lights up magnolia. Tres retro. What could be next - orange fur seat covers?

Retro yes, disgusting - I don't think so...

I'm sure my dad had a radio like that in his Vauxhall Victor [:D]

The lettering is white, it's not magnolia at all. I think you can safely lay off the orange fur seat covers now that I've seen the picture. I might still have to sugest that you rip out the oval dash and install a 924-early 944 dash though. Tartan seat facings would work well as well.

Sorry chaps all gone a bit OT.

Flamin' What about a blue LED that replaces the bulb holder in aftermarket instruments? Please! Nice and bright would be good in this instance as the original illumination is poor to say the least. Rick has plenty of gauges that he could replace the bulbs in - though perhaps not the AF gauge.

Can you get the 'light' 'third' and 'home' services on that as well as Oslo, Hilversum etc ?? [:D][:D][:D]
(apologies to the 'youngsters' who've never seen a radiogram)

I want to know how you change the crystal - not that I'm old enough to have seen a crystal set.... obviously. I did have a set of Players cigarette cards that told you how to build one. Great stuff, the first five cards dealt with marking out and making the wooden box to support all the electrickery. I wonder where those cards are now, they must be worth a few bob?
