'Flamingeye' LED Dash illumination kit

I have the solution. String dipped in wax, when lit offers one candela of light. Held in place via a lovely dash sconce![:D]

Can you get the 'light' 'third' and 'home' services on that as well as Oslo, Hilversum etc ??

I want to know how you change the crystal - not that I'm old enough to have seen a crystal set.... obviously. I did have a set of Players cigarette cards that told you how to build one. Great stuff, the first five cards dealt with marking out and making the wooden box to support all the electrickery. I wonder where those cards are now, they must be worth a few bob?

I got plenty of spares for Xtal sets - 4 cats to supply the whiskers for a start [:D][:D][:D]

I now have a website. Still adding and changing etc. www.flamingeye.co.uk
Annoyingly .com is taken, by someone who has registered name only, and wants $300 for it! P#ss take!
Anyway, there seems to be alot of IT guys on here. What is the best way to upload photos? I have photoshop. Photos look good on computer, print crystal clear, e-mail fine but there are some that no matter what I do to them (re-size, format whatever) still come out crap when I upload them.

I always use the File, Save for Web option in Photoshop and set the Quality to Medium. Always seem to upload fine for me.

BTW Darren, who much are these kits as, after seeing your site, the wife has just said she'll buy me one for my birthday [:D]

OK, I got the radiogram in this thread and it lights up very bright white. I also have dash bulbs failing to come on regularly in my cab so I'm thinking a white Flamingeye kit is what I need.

Did you pursue the heater controls LEDs at all, because it's all gotta look right...

The short answer to led heater controls is no.
Reasons.
I did experiment with this, but is not possible.
Firstly, it is difficult to take the console apart. Not impossble, but I think the majority of people would break bits.
Secondly, three of the bulbs are soldered to the board. So, not an easy replcaement.
Thirdly, I did do mine, and didn't look good/work. Because led's are more directional than ambient they do not give off enough light to illuminate the optical setup. I also tried freznel lens to spread the light to no effect.
It would take re-inventing the set-up basically, and I feel led are not the right thing for the job.
Never say never, but.......

As you can see, the one in the 1,2,3,4 dial control you can replace. I did a mold of the bulb and made a led one. I do still have the one between the centre vents (see pic.). But you can see the three in the pic (above) which is behind the mucho breakable perspex. These are the ones soldered onto the board.

Bummer.

I don't claim to know much about this sort of thing, but just having had a quick look at a website selling LEDs there are options such as wide angle, superbright and diffused. Any of them likely to help with the heater controls?

I don't mind a bit of careful disassembly or soldering and I would really like to get the whole dash sorted with nice white lighting.

I have a red felt tip - I figure if I colour in the white LED with that then I'll get a nice pink light [:D]

Oh yes they do. [;)]

I do use as wide an angle as possible and 'superbright' which is more of a trade name. Diffused is via a fresnel lens.

They only thing I noticed was that the other illuminated switches stood out (or not). That would be alot of hassle for little gain. Not a road to go down.

I'll have another look into it Fen.

I had a skim through the Maplin on-line catalogue to see if I could find anyLED's to install in my boost gauge to provide a matching blue light. Guess what, LED's are generally 5v not 12v. There is a reasonable sellection on red, orange and green LED's in 12v but the only 12v blue I could find was a flashing LED.
In fact, LED's are not 5v either. They are generally around 3v, but they are rated at an optimum current, not a voltage. So you don't hook them up directly to any voltage unless you want them to blow. You stick a resistor in series with them first. If your LED drops 3v and likes 30mA and you want to drive it from 12v, then you calculate the resistor as (12v-3v) / 0.03A = 300 ohms. This being real life, that probably means 330 or 270 ohms as resistors come in funny values. If you find a '5v LED' it just means it has a resistor already fitted, but that doesn't mean you can't bung another in series and run it off 12v regardless.

This has been a public information broadcast on behalf of the hardware engineers dept.
