Flat Battery

Only a short or a high charge rate could cause a fire, providing a degree of common sense is applied it is perfectly safe to charge a battery in sittu.
The alternative to crockodile clips attached to the battery is a power socket fitted to the car (like the cigarette lighter socket) attach a trickle charger to the adaptor and you do not need to lift the bonnet.

in your fuse box in the car by your right leg there is a big red pin you pull out to put power into your system, you need to get a live on this and an earth on the checkstrap bracket on the a pillar the metal part. this should give you some power to open the bonnet, if not you have an emergency pull cord which is hidden . should tell you where in your manual as i don't want to post it.
 
you can try it but it may not work , you may need either a booster pack or someone with some jump leads if you can get near enough
 
With a BMW my father owned you had to open the boot with the key and then connect up a battery pack to the boots courtesy light, then you could unlock the doors...
