forum manners

and yet the other side continue with their attacks which seem to be growing each and every day, some of these coming from long term members of this forum who should know better.

Interesting statement, as it comes from one of the long term members who should know better than starting a thread just for this issue [;)]
It sounds like it's ok to call a spade a spade then but only if we do not actually do it at all?
That's a strange logic...

I'd say that's a strange logic...
That a long time member "Should know better" to bring up and start a thread (on an important matter - the Poor conduct from some members).
Surely a prime candidate for this would exactly be a longer term member?

There's little point in me naming and shaming names, because it's clear for all to see in many posts who the regular protagonists are.
PSH (Pete) may not of agreed with some of my views and vice versa but to my knowledge he has not hurled personal insults & abuse at me like a few others have.

I would imagine that my calling a certain poster a "troll" in another thread somehow contributed to the job some moderators did not do since said poster seems (?) to have toned down his past "irritating posting pattern" since.
It is an example that supports my belief and experience that using "insults" sporadically at most and only in very specific contexts can return positive results.

....Forums can become to a certain extent self moderating in so much as people will react...

This is certainly true in certain cases, however, for a forum to be self moderating requires people to show their annoyance and for the protagonist to acknowledge the discord they are causing.

As a moderator it can be difficult to judge when people are ignoring subtle (or less subtle) hints because they are a) Caught up in the passion of the moment b) Too stupid to understand what is happening c) Being deliberately insightful.

If someone is deliberately manipulating a reaction for their own entertainment it is difficult to moderate that reaction when they keep doing it.

For example if I think a thread needs locking is that acceptable to do it or do I need to consult ?
To draw an analogy, when driving at dusk, my driving instructor taught me that the moment when you first wonder "is it dark enough to put the lights on?", it was dark enough to put the lights on.

Jon, if you as a moderator think a thread "may" need locking then it probably does.

There is plenty of backup available for you - other moderators, the forum admin team, the 944 Register Secretary, the Clubhouse team (George would be best first point of contact), the Register Director (Albert), the Communications Director (Nick), me. I am sorry if you have felt without support, that's not the idea! I would like to think that all the Club officials (and that includes you) are here for the right reasons and generally speaking, we all sing from the same hymn sheet - we are here as volunteers out of a love of the camaraderie, the Club, the marque and the cars.

This forum, particularly this part of the forum is usually a nice place to be. I am sure collectively we can ensure that remains the position long term.

Enjoy your 944s, my first Porsche was a 944 and it remains my wife's favourite!

In all the years of being a Forum Admin (15 years! jeez!) I have only ever had one Moderator ask me for advice.

We admins talk all the time and are not afraid to ask advice for event the most trivial of things. Sometimes it so easy to forget basics , but my excuse is my age ;-) One thing I try not to lose is my dignity and respect for other users on here.

Mostly I find this place to be pleasant, harmonious and usually self moderating by its own users.

I think that this thread will assist in that's self moderating as its evident that those on the 944 thread, who may well have caused this one to start, have indeed calmed down.

Well done.

I don't think forum misuse will be a problem in the future as it is turning into the Marie Celeste like lots of other forums.

Shame, then again there's always Facebook.

I think the initial fervour for Facebook will wane. I agree it is quick and, with so many apps, almost instantly accessible. It is also easy to post pictures.

It doesn't really work in addressing technical issues though. You might get a flurry of comments and help initially but there is no longevity to the thread like you have in a "proper" forum.

For meets and greets and instant communication it is very difficult to beat, but it doesn't work as a long standing reference.

After 15 years, almost every 944 problem has been discussed at length and a great many solutions are no more than "Search" away. You don't get that with Facebook.

Throwing fuel on the fire, eh? [;)]

Sorry, well spotted :ROFLMAO: - but I think my favourite Porsche experience will always be driving my previous Boxster Spyder, in France, with the roof down, in the sunshine, for my first experience of the Le Mans Classic with some great guys from R18 - something I never managed to do in the 944!

Enjoy your cars and have a great Bank Holiday Weekend gents.

There you go-there is always 1trollope making an inappropriate post??

Surely more correct to say "without the roof up" if driving a Spyder&what about the a lady drivers of 944s'??

I have only just caught up with this thread having had it pointed out to me today at Silverstone by a fellow 944 owner and I would suggest that the forum will only ever be as good as the sensible/helpful/ friendly posts on it. FB is only , as far as I see, a 'passing through' area for advice whereas the PCGB 'family' are always going to be there to help fellow owners. It's up to us as Members to make it friendly and helpful, I have only met this kind of Member/owner so perhaps I'm missing something?
Have a great weekend, enjoy Silverstone if you are there or going!
