France

I did about 3000 miles in France last year, I only had to put up with one prat on the road, who came down Mont Ventoux right down the middle of the road on a straight section and beeped his horn at me for not moving out of the way enough. Yep - you've guessed it. The car was a British registered Ford Mondeo!

The Autoroutes, despite being fairly expensive are just so, unbelievably smooth. I didn't realise the indicators on my 968 make a tick-tock sound, until I drove the car on French Autoroutes! The roads in Northern France are also unbelievably empty off season. Empty roads = driving heaven! The other roads can vary a bit in surface quality, sometimes the surfacing can be a bit noisy, but I can't ever remember seeing broken roads or potholes.

I'll be back in September [:D]

Is there much to be done to take your own 944 to France? I was (and am) tempted to do this, but thought it may be easier to get a hire car there rather than faff around with foreign insurance, brakedown cover, headlights dipping the wrong way etc...

Plus, if the truth be known, we could get a hire car with air con, and would almost certainly arrive at our destination approximately the same weight and water content as we left - my Lux has no aircon, and is a bit like sitting in a large black (but very enjoyable!) greenhouse...

Great food and drinks in Strasbourg, plus superb driving roads [:)]

Do it. Simple as that, just do it. You WON'T regret it.

Headlights are easy.

Insurance was included in my standard policy (up to 30 days worth).

Foreign breakdown cover cost an extra £70, and was a bit pricey. But, for the peace of mind, worth it.

Too hot? That's why Porsche built your car with a removable roof.

Seriously. I am pretty much counting the days until I can do it again.

Oli.

ETA: Downside is that this lot took quite a lot of cleaning off.

17 weeks or 119 days for me [;)]

I bring a bottle of glass cleaner and kitchen roll for cleaning the windscreen in the morning, before setting off for my day of driving.

Tempting Oli, very tempting. Inappropriate thoughts of hire cars have been banished - when we go, we'll go in style!

Cheers.
