Front Castor Mounts

Ideally you should upgrade to the 968 items as they contain more metal and less rubber. This will reduce tramlining, which may otherwise increase with the larger wheels and lower profile tyres.

Above is the new 968 mount with lots of metal and less rubber, below is the original S2 mount. It really helped reduce the tramlining on my car when I fitted 17" wheels. Around £40 each from the OPC

I pick mine up from Reading OPC today with my M030 ARB's!!! [8D]

I was just checking I wasnt being sold the Emporers New Castor Mounts if you know what I mean.

It also explains why I have to work so hard keeping my car going the way I want it...
 
Can you change these without altering the geometery?

No. You will have to have the geometry re-set once fitted as the bolt through the middle of the mount changes the set up.
 
Looking back from when I did mine, I think you can do it if you are careful on removal.

Look at this pic below. The mount is held to the underside of the car by two bolts A. The castor adjuster bolt is secured by two bolts B, the rear is visible here the front is hidden. The castor adjuster is the black tab C.

Loosen and remove the rear castor bolt B whilst ensuring the adjuster tab C does not move with an open ended spanner. Remove the two securing bolts A. The old mount should now slide backwards off the castor bolt without the bolt ever moving.

Slide the new mount onto the castor bolt and tighten everything up

If the black tab does move you will need a realignment [:)]

My castor mounts cost me £35 each inc vat and club discount a few years ago and it took me an hour to fit them. Soak everything in WD40 a few days before

I think I am starting to understand, Is the tab (c) part of an eccentric bush that fits inside the arm, if so could I mark its position and just put it back if it moves?

Is that a split in your bush madam[:)]........or just the photo?

These are my eccentric castor bolts though [:D] Berg does this picture make it easier to see how it all works? Marking the position would get you close, but it's only tiny movements that put the castor right out. If you leave the front bolt tightened then it cannot move (thats my theory anyway)

One more thing. These castor mounts are only for S2's and Turbos. It's not the same for the earlier cars and there is no uprated mount available for 17" wheels - sorry [:(]

My advice is don't buy a new eccentric bolt. It's identical to the one already on your car. They fleeced me for two when I did my upgrade and as you can see from the photo above it's teh same one that I already had (only cleaner). By all means get new nuts though [:D]
 
From dodgy memory, it's a different design and size. There is no eccentric bolt to adjust the caster, you simply loosed the mount then slide it around under the car until the correct caster is reached. Then you retighten the mount
 
What is the difference between the lux and turbo castor mounts

From 85.5 onwards Alloy arms were used throughout. These have the eccentric adjustment.

The steel arms used on the Lux before 85.5 use the sliding mount for adjustment. If your car is a pre 85.5 turbo, or post 85.5 of any model it will used the alloy arm.

Steel arms can be upgraded to alloy, but from the reading I have done it is suggested that if a 944 is to be used exclusively on the track or mainly on the track, steel arms are prefered (or some wickedly expensive billet arms). The issue there being the longevity of the ball joint which is a seperate issue...

In short:
924 -steel
944 lux pre 85.5 - steel
944 T pre 85.5 - alloy

944 post 85.5 alloy
944S alloy
944S2 alloy
944 T post 85.5 alloy

This information is contained in the 944 manual under 'chassis' section 40 up to page 57 odd. (research time kindly sponsored by my employer. heh heh)[8|]
 
Well thats the deed done, ARBs bushes, castor mounts, bolts, washers, nuts bought.

It dont half mount up!!!!!

Looking forward to fitting them over Christmas.
