Front discs

Worth adding that since I went to x-drilled sebro disks (don't know if cast or drilled holes) I don't get the problems with the pads glazing that I used to get. I assume the pads used to glaze because if I used the car for commuting then after a couple of weeks I would feel a marked decrease in brake pedal feel and sharpness. After a couple of hard sort stops the brakes always came alive again but since fitting the x-drilled disks the problem never materialises in the first place.

BTW the sebro disks have chamfers around the holes which I believe you are supposed to monitor since when the disk wears down enough to not see the chamfers its time to replace the disks. Not sure what benefits the chamfers give though but they might help slow or limit cracking?
 
One reason drilled discs crack is the holes fill with dust, it is simple to keep the holes clear just by blowing them through with compressed air, it seems to be prolonging the life of my drilled discs.

John completely agree that EBC reds no good when cold and to be honest I don't think they are much better when warm. Also agree brake discs are consumables and should be treated as such.

[:eek:] Isn't that what killed Steve McQueen. I appreciate that pads had more asbestos in them in those days but I wouldn't expect modern brake dust to be good for the lungs either way.

I have done it myself and afterwards thought "That was a silly thing to do". It is, by far, the easiest way to clean your discs though.

If I had the time I could write you a Risk Assessment and Method Statement but I don't think you would like it very much. The HSE aren't over keen on operations where the probability of harm is high and the resultant level of harm is severe/life threatening. It gets even worse when the action not only impacts on the operator but third parties within the vicinity.

In such instances terms like Cavalier, irresponsible and negligent tend to get bandied about.

While on the subject I am reasonably reliably informed that old engine oil and, more particularly, gear box oil can be carcinogenic.

Just a quick question, when fitting new pads, should I also put a new repair kit on the back of the pads to aviod lift, I'm told these may need glueing is that right?

The anti squeal pads that glue to the back of the pad cost £2 per piston, so with 4 pistons in each calliper it's a total of £16 to replace all of them per axle. I'm told you can reuse them by supergluing to the back of new pads. I've never used them and as long as the back of the pads are adequately smeared with copperslip grease they have been quiet
 
So some of you are recommending EBC Yellow Stuff pads, whilst some are using Pagids? Which colour Pagids are recommended for road use with trackday use too?

I think I need to sort the caliper plate lift issue on my new car as the brakes felt dead for the first few cms of application, but that might have been due to the car not being used for a few weeks - here's hoping!

Picking it up on the 18th, can't wait...[:)]

or Mintex 1155's of course...

Cheaper than the other 2 options & well suited to track use. Can be a bit noisy.

I'm switching to Performance Friction in the new year - the 1155's have lasted pretty well though.

In my experience, all the 944's have a reasonable amount of pedal travel - nothing like the on/off switches of most modern cars. This gets longer as the pads wear. The pedal firms up well with new pads.
 
Here's another vote for coppaslip on the back of pads instead of the anti-squeal shims. I've never used the anti-squeal shims and never had a problem with squealing. My EBC Yellows do squeal a little but only in traffic when going slowly and applying light pedal travel. When the car is at speed and when under heavier braking they don't squeal, so i'm happy this is an issue related to the pads rather the installaiton.

If you have caliper plate lift then i'd get that sorted. A mate of mine had an S2 and his brakes suddenly started to feel strange. It turned out that one of the outside pads had sized solid due to caliper plate lift so only the inner pad was working which had completely worn away to the metal, so he didn't know anything about it until he got the metal to metal contact. If you are getting any binding at all with the pads as you slide them in and out of the calipers you have lift and it needs to be sorted.
 
I cracked some solid discs as well.

I used to simply wear out the discs on mine, the discs were pennies.. they went all sorts of blue colours when thin
 
No on the 944. The Westy was really good on brakes (once I fitted 2.8 Capri discs and callipers). I guess because it was so light and, because you could see the wheels, modulate them really well.

+1 for Bert. 951.351.041.02: bottom of page two. Theyre about £140 each from an OPC excluding VAT.
 
Yep, actually they are grey powder coated as if you scratch it it comes off.

Are you sure S2/turbo discs are £150 each? I got rear ones for mine for about £60 reduced from £80 in one of those secret OPC clearance sales, and when I priced up the 928GTS discs when I upgraded to BB's they came out at £150 each. Though discs for a GT3mk2 come out at £350 each!
 
Im not sure and I have no idea what a decent parts department will do them for, but thats the price that the part number brought up. All I ever managed to buy cheap was three series two windscreens (£50+VAT) from JCT600 in Bradford. When they came PCGB had sent 3x 968 cabriolet screen with top tint (which no one wanted to take back) so I suppose that I did alright...
 
Eurocarparts is another option.

The Sebro discs are around £45 each (I've not been on th the website recently - based on memory only) and they are apparently OEM fitment - they have painted bells also. Avoid Zimmermans IMHO.

Bought today - have also found Promax v.good on pricing lately (belts, rollers, wpump, chain and slipper pads)

Yeah I found Promax v. god on pricing lately, consistently out pricing "OPC". I bought my discs and pads all round last year from Bert, was about £600 IIRC. Discs are easy to do, my old very worn ones are currently sitting in my garage, the "new" ones are going on this weekend if I remain sobre for long enough. One of the screws that holds the discs in place needed an impact screwdriver to remove it though. No idea why, just being awkward [:D]
