Front radiator grills and OPC Warranty

Image

New member
If I fit protection grills to front to prevent damage to radiators, will my OPC warranty be invalidated?

David,

Do you mean manufacturer's or extended warranty.

The answer with the first is probably no, the second is possibly yes, but it will all depend on your own Porsche Centre. Your best bet is to ask.

Regards,

Clive.

OPC Bristol put extended warranty on the vehicle I bought from Lancerlot via them and my OPC has serviced and MOT'd the car without comment.

Just had my extended warranty with grilles in place - no problem. But, then again, we do go to the same PC...[;)]

how much should one pay for an extended warranty? I have a 4 year old 997.2 turbo under factory warranty until 2015....do you know whether this can be longer and at what cost?

I answered that question on the other thread where you asked it, Keenan!

Cardiff haven't got excited (yet) about them being fitted to my 987 a Boxster, although I have read a while ago about someone having an issue with an air con warranty claim when they were fitted.

I suppose the warranty company argued that they normally get a rock through them (wear and tear) before they have the chance to corrode (warranty)......[8|]As above, it all depends on your PC.

I suspect that whilst there may not be an issue at service time, there may be a different view taken if a warranty claim is pending - only time will tell.

Look at it this way: You're a warranty company, and a claim for ÂŁ15K gets put through for a new engine. Are you going to pay out straight away, or are you going to look over the car to make sure it's as per the contract, so you don't have to pay out?

They may not care for something silly, but they very well may care for the big stuff and that's what you want the warranty for. You could fight it in court, but how deep are your pockets?

I don't disagree that it's completely common sense to fit the grills, but warranty isn't always common sense.

True, but the point is you only need a PC that does use common sense....after all they are the ones who carried out the 111 point check and submit the claim.

When I asked my OPC if they did kits for the front grills of my new Boxster S they said they didn't and if I had them fitted the warranty would be in-valid.
However they know my Turbo has a Bosch battery and when it came to warranty renewal time they were happy for me to swap the Bosch for a borrowed Porsche one to pass the checks?
Sometimes doesn't quite make sense?

That information is incorrect. New car warranty cannot be invalidated by fitting air grills. Extended warranty might, but they can always be removed. [;)]

Hi,
I raised this topic fairly recently in the 997 Members section - http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=792545

Subsequently I asked my local Porsche Centre (Aberdeen) to see if they could come up with a definitive answer on the implications of fitting (in my case) Zunsport grills. This is their response.
Regards,
Paul

I guess though that if you ask for an official response you'll get the 'official answer' straight back... they have no option but to do so.

Indeed - but is it best to find out up front or in the midst of a warranty claim?

Warranty companies are notorious for wiggling out of stuff if they can. Our other car is a BMW X5, the extended warranty is BMW but in reality it is an insurance policy provided by somebody else.

I would take zero comfort in what any POC centre advises as to if it is acceptable or not since it is a hypothetical question until a claim occurs. If they can get the business for an extended warranty then they will do so.

Clearly a slightly cynical view............

And if it came to argy-bargy, Porsche would need to explain why mesh is factory fitted to some units, yet is considered injurious in other derivatives of the same model. [8|]

Regards,

Clive.

I agree 100% Clive.

But when it's a home game for the warranty company I would expect it not to be a fair fight.

It's not about anything being 'injurious', the point is about modifications away from factory spec. for a given model.

True , but see my post #1 above.
Manufacturer's Warranty is regulated by statute, providing protection for the owner in the event a warranty claim is unfairly rejected and Extended Warranty, a contract between 2 parties governed by the terms set out.

Clive
