Frontrunner update

Well, I'm stuck back at home after a peice of undercarriage decided to come adrift. Fortunately on the M25 near home, as the fuel filter is now dangling loose...[]

So, Frontrunners for me was a drive through snow to South Mimms, a bucket of coffee and an hour wait and then a limp home worrying how long the fuel line can support the weight of the filter. Hope you had more fun than me! [][]

Offending part is the metal strap that holds the cover in place to protect the fuel pump. Which is now covered in salt from yesterday's snow....[&o]

Something to check if you're under the car. Mine had rusted through completely, and if not for the power feed to the fuel pump being hooked onto it the foot-square lump of sharp metal would have been under the front of Jon's new car!

Damn bad luck Mr McN', but just as well it happened where it did, and with Jon behind to see it.

Those of us that made it had a great time (once we got there). Going up the M40 in the morning was about as much fun as pushing pins into your privates and potentially just as painful. Snow, big tyres and stiff suspension really don't mix. []

A big thank you to Geoff and Mr Sloane for organising yet another, superb event. The sunshine on the snow around the Cotswolds made for breath taking views.

Also, a big thank you to all those who made the effort to turn up. It doesn't matter how good an event is, if people don't support it the organisers have done nothing more than waste their time.

Had a really good time despite the conditions on the way up. All that snow and slush on tyres more suited to trackdays was interesting to say the least.

Big shame about the bits falling off Pauls car - who said Luxs are less corrosion prone than Turbos/S2s [;)]. Seriously, hope its not too horrendous to fix.

The rally was great too - enjoyed it much more than I thought I would and as John says the Cotswolds in the snow was a sight to behold. Hope you guys finally found a pub that hadn't run out of food, sorry had to bail out at that point but had to get my navigator home who had been let out by "her indoors" under a certain amount of duress and had to get back.

Big thanks to the organisers - am really looking forward to the Cotswold Rally in a couple of weeks. [:)]

I was more concerned about the front of your car had it detatched! 70mph, and a good-sized chunk of metal held on by one little 20-year-old plastic clip.....[]

Having been able to get under the car when it warmed up a bit you can see it's only bolted on. I was a little concerned that it might involve welding near the fuel tank, but one bolt can't be too much labour and I should have a new one sourced. From an S2 that's being broken - that wouldn't happen to a Lux! [:D][:D][:D]

Glad everyone had a great day out, I look forward to the pictures!

Sorry I wasn't able to make it along, had transport problems at the last minute []
Sounds like a good day was had and I can't wait to see the pics.

Bad luck Paul, hope you get it sorted quickly (I suspect the same written off S2 is also 'donating' its wheels and tyres and maybe a few other bits to my car soon [;)]).

Now fixed!

Simon at Essential Styling had a good used strap, RPM got it powder-coated and fitted it with much trouble. Possibly the fiddliest thing ever to get the fuel pump and feed attached to the undertray and then all in exactly the right place and pushed up enough for the bolt to engage. I held the torch.....[:)]

Next time your car is in for a service or on a ramp get this checked, and spray with rustproofer. If mine had rusted through then many others will be going, and it's easy to prevent.

Paul,

Thanks for the warning.

Is that a Lux-only part, or is the same design used on the S2 and Turbo as well?

Oli.

Same principle. And on 968. There are, however, two types so it's better to treat the one in place than get a new one and fit it. Brand new are £65 and used are rusty...mine looked superficially good from underneath bit in fact was only the original paint holding in some rusty dust. []

Spray with rust proofer at the same time as the fuel lines as a service item!

As if we haven't got enough to worry about with the rusty sill scenario [8|]

Thanks for the tip Paul, something for the weekend [:)]
