Frontrunners

ORIGINAL: John Sims

The burger van provided grub of a much higher standard than you generally expect but wasn't doing very much trade. If I had been running the van I'd be thinking hard about supporting next year.

Don't worry. I organise the burger van and they do get some good events out of me like the Cotswold Rally, Porsche & Polo, PCGB Autojumble and a Motorcycle event that attracts 8,000 bike and 40,000 people.
You win some, you loose some.

What on earth is the EVO triangle???? [&:] Is it where Mitsubishis get warped to an alternate universe or taken up by space aliens?

I had to pass on this Front Runner as my weekends have been a bit too much 944 orientated lately and the next two will see me attending a R10 treasure Hunt and then of course the Dyno Day (I also had to finish putting up my new shed/workshop/fence which has taken 3 weeks now [8|])

As far as events go I much prefer the ones where something is actually happening involving the cars (ie race, trackday, convoy, treasure hunt) as opposed to just turning up and tyre kicking. Tyre kicking does have its place though (along with bonnet lifting) and the purely social meets like Reading, Hastings, Cornbury have their place (especially over the winter)

I'm thinking of standing down as Asst 944 Register secretary as I just dont seem to have as much time as I used to and I dont want to be an official in name only. Debbie and I have long talked about organising a driving weekend around the Midlands like Mark Roperts did in the Lake District (but without the scenery [:D]) but it's getting down to it thats the problem.

We really do need another large weekend away event to give us all a kickstart and get some new blood along. Maybe a fun event so we can break down any barriers anyone might feel about being a newby amongst all us old cliquey has beens [:D]

Thinking about it, maybe we need a really big push for an all singing and dancing 944 Register campsite spectacular at Eynsham this year [:)]

If we can get the Motorsport Caravan converted into a stage, with a stack of Marshalls and room for Rick's drums, it will be all singing and dancing [;)]

What a great idea! Lots of 944's to look at all washed down with gallons of Lager. This would work as there should be plenty of other things going on as well.

Paul

We had been wondering about a weekend in Brecon, or there abouts, as it is relatively easy to get to from the M4/M5. We would be willing to head up or co-ordinate such an event if there were some local scouts willing to lend a hand.

John,
We live close to the Welsh border & would be willing to help out & attend a Welsh weekend.

What on earth is the EVO triangle
Its 3 roads.......guess what shape it is on the map[;)]

If you have been to Brenig reservoir then you have been on one side of it, the northern side goes over Denbigh moors and the third leg is the A5 and only used to link the other 2 roads.

I did it with the wife the Friday after Easter[:D][:D][:D][:D][:D] and her finger marks are still embedded in the door handle[:D][:D][:D]

Only seen about 6 other cars (not counting A5) but one was a cop car, and 5 min later my snooper detected a Lazar!

Be careful out there and watch out for bikers, they love it too, especially at the weekend.

Not so much Wales as the outskirts of Liverpool then [;)].

Anywhere "nice" is going to be over run with caravans, campers, and people with cloth caps in season so we really want to be looking at around this time of the year (next year) to ensure the roads can be enjoyed.

Noting the initial interest I will start another thread to assemble the bones of an event.

I can't readily get to anywhere north of Rhayader as my parents live near Swansea, so assistance from Liverpudlians would be most welcome. See how there is even a North South divide in Wales.

I further note that Rick has been pondering an Isle of Wight weekend so that might come first.

Thanks Jim, 11 weeks so 25 to go, seems like a worryingly short amount of time!

(now where are those child car seat posts [:)])

From my recollection the recommended (by this forum) child car seat was a Britax Ranger. The problem you may face is getting a rear-facing car seat to fit. I thought that I would be able to fit the twins in their rear-facing seats in the back and my 2½ year-old daughter in her car seat in the front, but can't get the other seats in the back. Now that they are nine months old I might be able to get some other seats to fit in the back.

Sorry this is well off-thread. Back to Frontrunners stuff...

Thanks for that, and yes apologies my fault for taking it OT, I have heard rear facing seats don't fit in the back as well. at least with a '90 car I have 3 point rear belts so later on that will be ok. So neatly bringing it back on topic, an event next year has to be July for me or someone might get left at home [;)] can you draw straws at 6 months?
Tony

As we are off topic......

Following the commercial success of the Uberscopen I am now considering the universal solution to small children in cars, and the variation in provision for child seats.

Ladies and gentlemen.......I give you......

The Kiddie Car Case.

What we have is a GRP (or Carbon Fibre) outer casing which is the same size, and shape, as an adult and can therefor be retained safely by conventional seat belts.

The front of the casing opens and will accept various internal padding systems to accommodate children of all sizes.

This system has various advantages including:-

  • Being an impermeable outer shell, should the enclosed child throw up or leak any other obnoxious substance this will be contained within the Kiddie Car Case protecting your upholstery. The inside of the Kiddie Car Case can then be pressure washed at a later more convenient time.
  • The solid shell will both protect the occupant and immobilise them making it impossible for multiple children to fight. (One Kiddie Car Case will be required for each child.
  • If the Kiddie Car Case is stored in the vehicle this will allow you to avoid giving lifts to people who annoy you and also use multiple occupancy lanes.

Additional features will include integrated sound systems so the enclosed children can listen to their own annoying music and an intercom systems so drivers only have to listen to the child when they want to.

I remain convinced that a significant number of accidents are caused by drivers being distracted by children in the car. This system will control such distractions and make the roads a safer place.

Excellent [:)]
do they come in half size so they fit neatly in the back seats?
Tony

Yes, this will be be the Kiddie Sports Car Case, Ideal for 2+2 cars. This will have the slight disagvantage in only accomodating children up to 8 years old because of the reduced external propotions.

We are also developing the Kiddie Cabrio Car Case which has a spoiler fixed to the top to increase downforce when the roof is down. Obviously the spolier is retractable so the the Car Case can still be used with the roof up.

If you ever extend the range I'd be interested in a Wifey Cabrio Car Case in carbon fibre.

Whilst I appreciate that Product Liability and H&S rules dictate what you can reasonably suggest in public, I propose that if they (the Kiddie's) are small enough you could put 2 or 3 in each case (suitably padded). Hey presto - turn your 944 into an MPV!

I sense that the Frontrunner topic will need to start again in a separate thread now.... [:D] this one could run and run.

Hi Phil,

A very reasonable assumption, and perhaps a powerful marketing ploy - once parents are dialled into the Car Case concept they are sure to purchase additional cases as their sproglets get bigger. Unfortunately, we must consider the forces involved in the event of a crash.

Seat belts work in a certain way and were a mother (who's minds seems to become addled through child birth) to place one child in the wrong slot in a multiple occupancy Car Case the combined centre of gravity may be wrong and, as a result, encourage submarining within the seat belts. So as to ensure that the Car Case performs consistently through out the growing period of the child we will only approve a single occupancy system (this way people have to buy more.

We do appreciate that there are advantages in being able to accommodate more small people than there are seats and so will be developing a system for roof mounting additional Car Cases.

If you ever extend the range I'd be interested in a Wifey Cabrio Car Case in carbon fibre.

Will that be with extra sound proofing...........put me down for one..........extra large[:D]
