Fuel economy . . .

Disgraceful behaviour!

But as it was a controlled diagnosis whether your fuel light worked I wholeheartedly approve [:-]

Must try harder - I might have seen 162 on my GPS on a road that goes from Manchester to Hull (maybe [&:]) while showing a 540i that I didn't have a 155mph limiter [:D]. That was standard plus a boost enhancer, not modified by the way, but I guess the road was of the type that doesn't have roundabouts.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]I do believe Plod is very understanding with regards to getting the fuel light tested, though.[FONT=verdana, geneva"]

I know, a very poor effort really [:(] I've been admonishing myself for not getting the hammer down sooner, as that stretch of road is definitely long enough to explore the limits...

Fen...'that road that goes from manchester to hull' is affectionally known as the M62 up 'ere ![;)]

It was either on a private road parallel to that one or I was being deliberately vague [&:]; you never know who is reading this.

Your high speed antics put my 120mph efforts to shame, I think I need to step upto the plate. However I am more of a twisty stuff merchant and have yet to find a car that i've come up against that can shake me. So far I've had tussles with Skylines, Scooby's, RX8's and a plethora of various BMW's and so far have easily stuck to them like glue. The most satisfying so far was an M3 stuck to my tail on a twisty road I know pretty well. Granted, on the sweeping bends and straights he was there looming large in my mirror but couldn't get the momentum for an overtake, but as the road narrowed and became more twisty he started to wain ending up with a bit of a sideways moment which seemed to scare him into submission and he let me go. Probably more of a case of me knowing the road better I know, but still very satisfying all the same. Nice to know that our cars in the hands of average drivers are a match for the majority of much more expensive kit that are quicker on paper.

You guys - be careful out there!!, especially at this time of year.
Got NIPped the other day after overtaking an Audi S3 off the lights and I decided to keep the foot planted just a few seconds too long as the road was straight and clear of vehicles in front for half a mile.
It was dark and rozzers don't show up too well in the rear view mirror until the blues come on. He'd been watching the Audi a from few cars back and I got pulled when he did not go off as quick as I expected.
Anyway, learn't my lesson now and probably done me a favor.
So now I wait.....

Anyway back on track - 280 miles on a full tank so far and just touching the red.

OT again, but a 'BMW 530d Touring'? Sounds like a decent bit of kit and there'll be plenty if room for the kids, the dogs and the green wellies [;)]

I haven't got it yet; put a deposit down yesterday and collecting on Wednesday from Whitley Bay (780 mile round trip and I'll have done it twice [:(]).[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana,geneva"]'02 02, decent blue metallic, leather, sat nav (but strangely no TV tuner so I need to get one off eBay), steptronic, automatic xenons, nice 17" wheels, removable tow bar plus the dual climate, cruise, auto wipers and dipping mirror etc. they all have. You may well think that would be an easy spec to find but at the money I wanted to spend everything was cloth, manual or had a 15" scrape high up on the door (you'd think the vendor would have mentioned that before I drove to Nottingham to view it...), hence the trip to the north east. As a bonus the rear suspension bushes aren't shot, too. The bloke selling it is having the 306, which is a double bonus.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]I think the Touring looks better than the saloon and after my Carlton I vowed never to buy another big car with a boot as you can't actually fit anything big in them. Hopefully being an estate it isn't so tarred by the 318i stigma Tony mentioned and I checked and the (rare) optional indicators work. It also has a 2 tonne braked towing capacity, so I might try towing the 944 to track days.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]BTW my wellies are blue [:D] (and no, we didn't forget to add bump to your Christmas card).[FONT=verdana, geneva"]

I'm sure I used to get about 350 out of a tank when it was standard, or 250 if really really on it (Racing through Germany on the autobahns at a 150 average!) I must admit, I had thoughts that my light didn't work either until it came on just as I passed a filling station near Lille a few years ago. Now at least I know (the hard way)! Unfortunately I have no idea how bad it is since I've modded it somewhat. I don't even care to look! Just fill it up when needed......

On a lesser point, I recently joined a mini forum (was my new toy until I realised just how far the tin-worm had got in!). I had to qualify myself for some reason with what I'd done on the Porsche, and the amount of offers of a race was amazing! These students..... [8|]

Yeah, much prefer it's looks to that of the saloon and you're probably correct in saying that you won't be labelled as 'one of those' types. Great spec too by the sounds of it.

Don't get me started on the car selling code of conduct - or the lack of one. Still remember when looking for the Scoob a few years back, turning up to see one which was claimed to be 'one of the cleanest examples around'. Clean that is if everyone elses in the Country at that time also had a massive scratch on one of the wings and the most laughable bonnet lip respray. People are very strange...

Whitley Bay

That would be a 10 mile return trip for me! Should have given me a shout, I could have looked at it for you! The petrol you would have saved could have bought you the TV[:D]
[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]I might be back tomorrow. I have an optional meeting in Bristol that I would like to attend in the afternoon and I'm seriously considering just heading north after it and staying local to Whitley Bay then doing the car changeover first thing Wednesday (i the seller is happy to do that the morning after his Christmas 'do').[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]You could have looked at it for me I guess and that would have helped in one way (so thanks), but ultimately the seller is buying my 306 purely on the back of my throwaway "you don't want a cheap Peugeot, do you" and if I had travelled up by plane/train with money to take the Bimmer home then I would have been coming home to a car I no longer need that I still had to get rid of.[FONT=verdana, geneva"]

The best MPG I got in the S2 was just short of 40mpg on a 10 day trip abroad but my average was around the 24-26 mark which consisted of 60% stuck in solid traffic at snails pace and the remainder motorway at a speed just above the national limit [;)]

What causes bad fuel economy other than the obvious nailing it everywhere, your turbos seem to be doing far better than my 'S' on fuel, plus mines jst been serviced so i expected a little better than im getting, mostly town work short trips , work etc and best im getting is 14mpg, ive also tried redex injection cleaner as well but hasnt really improved???

thoughts?[:-]

It's the town driving on my daily commute which completely screws my economy I reckon. I think someone else on this thread said they estimated a return of 11mpg in this type of situation. I've just been to Heathrow and back today (100 mile round trip) sitting mostly in the 80-100mph range and the needle has barely moved. The gauge is threatening to bring me my first 350+ tank since ownership...
