Yes, I think it was the E85 and some other blends, the link below is a new one I found. It seems that blending ethanol can significantly reduce the calorific value of the fuel, so what you gain in higher efficiency, you lose in actual energy content in the fuel. (I doubt if they are set at min for UK but I wanted to see what difference it made) If anyone still looks at this thread & wants to know how to get to it I can leave instructions.
Are you sure that affects the ignition timing?
 
It does indeed change both the mixture and the timing. http://motronic.ws/ Select FQS - fuel quality switch from the menu on the left. What is noticeable, it that the switch position does not run from full lean to full rich, so if you have wound it to position 7, you may be running leaner than standard but with retarded ignition !
 
I dreamt of owning a 911 for forty+ years and was recently in a position to realise that dream (early retirement etc.). It is an indulgence, but unlike most indulgencies, probably won't loose me a shed load of money if looked after. I love the car to bits - it's abilities and quality never cease to amaze me. One thing you will NEVER catch me doing is filling it with supermarket fuel of any grade. With the miles most of us drive in these cars, a couple of pence per litre will make very little difference to the annual running cost in comparison to other expences. Remould tyres anyone??
 
Remould tyres are an inferior product. Normal and super are of the same quality but with different specifications. It could be more significant where you buy your fuel. A garage that sells little super unleaded, could have fuel thats sat in the tank for a long time, collecting moisture and losing some of the more volatile components in the mixture. A supermarket can be a really good place to fill as its often cheaper, and you get a lot more turnover of fuel in the tank. The fuel quality is as much guaranteed here as in most other garages. After all that [:D], I do fill with super, and not at a supermarket (as ours does not do super), but the garage I go to does have a lot of people filling with super.
