Gear Linkage Failure

Back to my earlier post, I suppose.

Either all owners affected by this problem write to Porsche GB or Porsche in Germany and seek a written explanation, or let the media have the story and Porsche face the adverse publicity whilst they organise the explanation.

IMO, as a non-techie, these components should last for a long time. The fact that there is a recall indicates that the parent company accept that there is a problem which is down to them and not the owner.

It may well be the first one that paticular dealer has seen...

We are now aware of four [&:]
I agree one is too many and that it should be under warranty no questions asked.
I never remmeber seeing lots of these fail on the 996, so possibly it could be a bad batch..

Lets try and keep things positive guys.[;)]

Hi all,

Make that 5 - mine failed (pulling away from a junction and changing from first to second) earlier this year. 2005 C2S with 66000 on the clock. Recovered to OPC Bristol and fixed with wallet lightened by £268.

Cheers for now,

Adrian

. . . The fact that there is a recall indicates that the parent company accept that there is a problem which is down to them and not the owner.

Is this confirmed? I've not been contacted by my OPC and if it were a recall I'd expect them to. I think there ought to/might be a web site where tech bulletins for specific models can be viewed.

The linkages were a weakness on 986 series Boxsters, and i dare say 996s too - another 'characteristic' carried over the model generations :(

I have my car back now, tech confimed one of the gear selector cables had snapped towards the back of the car, sounds similar to Ian W.

Tech said it was an unusual failure and also noted there was no sign of corrosion. No mention of a recall.

Glad to have my C4S back, the x-type was horrible.

I have a 987 boxster S. The gear linkage cable broke at the gearbox end , just where the rigid section of the linkage joins the flexible section. The result was that there was no fore/aft connection on the linkage. The porsche agent where I took the car to repair , said he had seen a number of 997 models with the same failure , infact they even kept a 997 cable in stock for that very reason. Unfortunately the 987 is a shorter cable but identical design so plagued with the same issue. The mileage was about 36,000 and 4 years old. The new part is a few sequence numbers on from what was originally fitted, suggesting it's had a number of redesigns. .
