Gearbox noise.????

Hi Folks
Does any of you chaps know if the 944S2 suffer from the same "pinion" bearing problems as the 968 can do.??????
OR
What else goes wrong with the rear box/diff on a 944S2.?????

Hi Big Dave,
No the S2 doesn't have the 968 pinion problem. I had a noisy box on my S2 and i had the oil changed and it stopped wining and was quieter. If you've done that already then i'm not sure what it will be.

Dave, the only time we hear of wear is purely through old age or an owner who does not know/ ask to have the gear oil changed every few years. Gearbox rebuilds are one of those expensive items that owners of these budget cars always dread so I always err on the side of caution and change the gear oil every 2 years

Has your car been stood for any period of time? Check its not your hub bearings. I went through a complete rebuild only to find the noise still there but no play in the bearings. They were still shot though!!! Changed the bearings and the noise went away!

Good Luck

I have a whirry/clinking noise when the clutch is released, it's been looked at and i was told it is the clutch bearing - get a new clutch next year anyway so no major problem. Is that the sort of noise/time it occurs on your S2 ?

Could be release bearings but could also be torque tube.
Does the noise saty there when the car is in Neutral and disappear when you depress the clutch?
