Gen II

Licker and Poker

New member
Hi all
Im thinking of upgrading from my Boxster to a Proper Porsche (So I keep been told)
I can't manage a new one but would like to get a Gen II if possible
My question is at what age they changed to Gen II ?
What are the differences apart from the body styling ?
Also is there anything I should avoid?

Thanks

Lewis

The people telling you to upgrade don't know what they're talking about ... the Boxster is a proper Porsche [:)]

A) July 2008
B) PDK available (I love it!) DFI with 30 more bhp Better mpg (allegedly!) Improved PASM and therefore better ride over the bumpy stuff. PCM 3.0 with bluetooth, better Sat Nav (although not brilliant) and much neater centre console, iPod connectivity
C) Not really, but you should try out PDK v manual to compare. Get the S unless you are bothered about road fund licence!

All the above, of course, in my humble opinion

Not forgeting those lovely new Carrera S II wheels, and the new engine has been lowered by a whole 4mm! I also believe the 2010 cars now come with a PDK style steering wheel (without the paddles naturally)

The people who think a mid engined boxer flat 6 two seater Porsche isn't a "Proper" Porsche []

Agree, Boxster is brilliant.

Best reason for a 911 over a Boxster/Cayman, is the extra space.

The true performance potential of the 2009 Porsche Boxster is unleashed when the road starts to twist. AutoWeek declares that the "handling is darn near perfect," and for emergency stops, the "brakes are phenomenal."

It is during hard driving that Motor Trend claims "no other sports car is more balanced, more rewarding, or more fun." Regarding ride comfort, Edmunds says that "some may find the Boxster's around-town ride too stiff, but it's never particularly harsh."

From there, the praise simply keeps coming, as ConsumerGuide reports that the "steering feel is natural, communicative and responsive" and the Porsche Boxster is "rock-steady on straightaways and agile and balanced in corners." Kelley Blue Book adds "the term 'Porsche brakes' has become a synonym for the ultimate in safe, positive stopping."

Conclusion
The 2009 Porsche Boxster offers incredible performance

Both are great cars - as Ts said, it really depends what floats your boat. I have had 2 different generation Boxster S' and loved them, I also love my 997.

So drive both and buy the one you like the most.

Just remember, the 997 is quicker.................:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

Well I have had 2 Boxsters and 2 997 Gen 11s (+ others as you can see). I cannot honestly say that the Gen 11 is better than the Boxster taking everything into consideration. For heavens sake, I could get 2 Boxster Ss for what I paid for my 997 Gen 11 Cab; surely a Boxster is better value for money and will produce just as much fun.

Derek, you are totally correct... with the comparison being a Cabriolet.
But like you people buy a 911 cabriolet because they want a 911 cabriolet.

As someone who is new to the marque, I looked at the Cayman and Boxster esp now they have more power and the same interior update as the 997.2 (or very similiar)

I've never understood the "that's not a real porsche" mentality. I love them all always have, however when it came to buying one it just had to the the 911........It's Iconic.

At this end of the market its about the heart not the head - you buy what you like most/can afford

Some people love their boxster or caymans and won't be told anything else compares - likewise with the 911 - even more so there some people love their air cooled or water cooled engines, their turbo's or their GT3's. We'll even get a raft of Panemara lovers when the cars have been on sale for a while.

They are all great cars, we all just like different things - which in this day and age of conformism we should celebrate.

Buy what floats your bot not what some one else tells you should buy and enjoy every minute of it. [:D]

Absolutely right. The Cayman is the best car Porsche make. But this time I purchased a 911 Cab. I don't want to eat fillet steak every day of the week.

Moreover, if I'm spending this sort of money on a car, I want people to look at it and say 'WOW'. That never happened with my Boxsters or Caymans. It certainly does with my 911.

Having owned 911's x 5 and Boxster's x 5 I can honestly say IMO the Boxster S is pound for pound a far better "all round sportscar" than todays base 997 Cabrio but unlike Derek I am thrilled to bits that nobody will ever "WOW" over a Boxster/Cayman as drawing attention to ones self in these times is the last thing I would personally want to do for all the obvious reasons [;)]

I think most Porsche owners often feel they are driving the best Porsche ever made but the Boxster S floats my boat and having recently toyed with heavier hardware ie 997 Cabrio & AMV Roadster after many miles and hours testing, each trip back home in my Boxster was just as thrilling which left me to ponder if it ain't broke why try fixing it and for a lot more hard earned too

2009 Porsche Boxster and Cayman - 10Best Cars

The hallmark of a true sports car is how well it involves its driver in the driving. Although the Boxster and the Cayman differ in character"”roadster versus hardtop"”they're alike in terms of how well they communicate every nuance of mechanical information to the pilots and how accurately they convert driver inputs into response. This is the essence of the car-and-driver connection, and few sports cars do it better.[FONT=verdana, geneva"][FONT=verdana, geneva"]
Neither of these mechanically identical mid-engined cousins can be called inexpensive. Pricing for a basic Boxster, with a 245-hp, 2.7-liter flat-six, isn't much under $50,000, and a loaded Cayman S easily surpasses $70,000. But we have yet to meet an owner who thinks his car isn't worth the money.

This is the 10th 10Best appearance for the Boxster, and the third straight for the Cayman. Aside from several electronic comfort/convenience options"”XM satellite radio and Bluetooth, iPod, MP3, and USB connectivity"”both cars enter the 2009 model year unchanged. However, direct injection and dual-clutch automated manual gearboxes are expected to be on the list of mechanical particulars sometime in early '09.

All true, but a C2S PDK Cab is still the best car by far. It just is not as good value as a Boxster. Still, it IS better value than a F430 Spider!

However, no pockets in shrouds. [:D]

More than a bit off topic.

Does anyone with a 997 2S know how to increase the brightness of the dials at night? I believe that it is possible to do this - for some reason the speedometer and other dials are a bit dark.

Thanks - and please remember that a non technie needs all the simple help he can get.
