It should be automatic, you are correct in that you can set it yourself but I can't at this point remember how...[&:]
May be manual time [:'(]

I believe it to be the knob at the lower left of the speedo which has a bulb symbol in the middle. This knob is also used for resetting the trip counter. Turn left or right and a bar appears under the digital speedo to show how bright the instrument illumination should be. That will be three beers then Julian.[:D]

Captain

I have tried twisting my knob but cannot see any difference. Perhaps I should wait until it is dark. At say, 9 minutes past 8 p.m. tonight when it will be 20:09 2009 2009.

As the bowl said to the fork when it was confronted with an egg - "Now beat that."

The lights have to be switched on first........................[;)] Page 97 of the manual, I believe.[:D] Sorry OP

Does anyone with a 997 2S know how to increase the brightness of the dials at night? I believe that it is possible to do this - for some reason the speedometer and other dials are a bit dark.

Thanks - and please remember that a non technie needs all the simple help he can get.

Well, non-techie, why not try looking in the driver's manual [:D]

Is that enough help?

No?

Try page 95 (Gen II)

Need more help?

Turn the left hand knob just below the revcounter left or right. A bar graph will appear. Hold it until you reach the required brightness.

Incidently, the lighting is also adjusted automatically to the abient brightness by the light sensor in the analogue speedometer

Thanks folks.

I have a Gen 1 car. And as a good LWA I do not always trust everything I read. Tried twisting the knob last night - nothing seemed to happen.

Will try again soon as indicated above.

Maybe its an attitiude adjusted light - which would discriminate agaisnt LWA's

Class action anyone?
