Geometry

The last time Chris at Centre Gravity did work for me it took around 12 hours to complete, so around 8pm I stuck the tom tom to the windscreen and set off home. i'd been driving only a few minutes, when exiting a roundabout the sat nav came unstuck and fell, foolishly i reached over to try and catch it and steered into the curb! I stopped the car had a look at the damage to both nearside wheels then set off again hoping the geo' would be ok, no such look, so i phoned Chris and told him what had just happened, bring it back now he said, so I did! First he checked the runout of the damaged wheels, all fine, then checked and reset the geo' again, mostly the n/s front. At 1am I set off for home! I can't speak of Chris highly enough, not only is his work first class he's an absolute gent to boot!

Hi guys, just a quick one, my car seems to fun fine but maybe pulling v slightly to the left so will get the geo checked out.

Just wondering how much it will roughly cost for CG to look at it. A few hundered?

Do they make many changes for every day driving or is his skill really for people who want to do track work? And how much of a difference do the changes make and how do the handeling charachteristics of the car change from Porsche standard set up from the factory?

Call Jayne/Chris for a quote. If not available on the land line I listed earlier in the thread then try Chris' mobile:

Yes, Chris can do fast road set-up or track set-up for you. Your pick.

For a fast-road set-up the difference I found can be comparable to trying to run in Wellington boots versus trainers. You would be amazed at the difference!

Thanks Alex will give them a call.

Unfortunately don't get may fast roads as live in London but great when I get out into the country. How does it feel different though, more planted or not such a hard ride?

Without upgrading any parts and just changing alignment the car will ride just the same but feel a lot lighter on it's feet. Makes a standard 997 feel about 200kg lighter!

Will be looking to get my own cars geometry checked soon. Is there a write up anywhere on what exactly they do and how they do it? Obviously not interested in doing it myself but would like to understand more about it.

There is a write up from Paul Williams about his experiences with his 964 under the attention of Chris Frnaklin here..

Admittedly Paul had pretty much all his suspension renewed at the time, but as you read the various posts you can get a good feel for the 'Franklin Experience'.

Took the car up to Centre Gravity on Friday and (apart from the cracked windscreen) had a fantastic day. Chris listened to what i wanted and then explained everything as he went. The welcome and the insight into the suspension and the reassuring noises he made about the history of my car and the set up it required were great.

Afterwards the test drive was a little worrying on damp roads, but it just feels more planted and responsive and so progressive when you poke it with a stick! I am really pleased with the results and would say to anyone thinking about it that it is the best money I have spent on the car so far! Well worth it.

Had plenty of fun on the way home, carrying good speed through corners with confidence and enjoying great control under breaking and accross cambers etc.

You were all right in your advice and i thank you all for that.

Glad you had fun!! [:D]

I am thinking of asking Chris to come with me to a track event or something in the next few months so we can continue to play with my geometry (and sway bar) settings. Perhaps Silverstone or MIRA which are close to Chris.

His whole rig can travel so perhaps if we can get a few members together then we can all have a play with our geometry options.

Anyone interested then please let me know and I will propose to him.

Alex,

I will be at the clubs track day at Silverstone on the 28th July and would be interested in having my geometry reset if it can be done in an hour or so

This maybe a stupid question but do you need the geo looked at every time you change your tyres? Just I need some new ones soon and want my geo looked at but will it be wasted if I do the tyres first?

Changing the tyres should make no difference to geometry set-up.
