gone from a 986s toa 987 2.7

just a short note i have traded the 2002 986 S in for a 2006 987 2.7 with 13.5 k on the clock same colour as before speed yellow, the 987 feels more postive on the road compared with my old S .[:D]

Are you referring to response, torque or power? Do you also find the 987 any more economical?
When I compared both current models, the S seemed quite a bit quicker and not much different on mpg.
I decided the 2.7 was quick enough.
 
the steering response and roadholding seems better than my old 3.2s. its doing 4to5 mpg more the gear box ratios feel better ,it a little bit slower than than the s but quick enough for me [:D]

Is it a 5 or 6 spd box as I have the Sport Edition and find the 6 spd gearbox and one of its best features.
Steering reponse and roadholding are affected by wheels/tyres and suspension, do you have 18ins / Conti SC2's and PASM by any chance?
 
mine has a 5 speed box and 17 in alloys no pasm and michelin tyres,

Any other comments about how the current Boxster 2.7 compares with the 986 S? Are a lot of S owners drawn to the 2.7 when getting a newer Boxster or do you stick to the new S and enjoy more power?
 
I have had my 2.7 Tip Speed Yellow 987 06 for just over a year now and get 31MPG no matter how I drive it and find it fast enough for my style of driving ,the previous one was the 3.2 Tip Anniversary 986 04 it was faster in some respects,but overall the 987 feels a better drive as it has Conti Sport 17 on it and the ride is a bit softer than the 18 on the 986 I suppose if I where to drive the next generation Box it will feel different again .

Mine having 18in and PASM feels very comfortable on the soft setting but I have no experience of 17ins. I did find the current S has a lot more torque low down but like you do I really need that in every day use..........only to show off.
When you refer to the next gen Box do you have any details of what will change or are you making the point that car technology is always moving on?
 
No details ..just that technology will hopefully build a better car than the last one.. My days of track and high speed are over, looking for a nice drive and the 987 fits the bill .

I tend to be in the same category, used to have an S5 and after the show off bit did I really need the power and computer gismos - No.
Enjoying the precision of the Boxster drive and it seems to be loosening up with 500 mls coming up so will add a few revs. 32mpg so far.
 
You guys are doing well on fuel consumption. I do drive quite hard but I'm only getting 26mpg from my 2006 2.7!

Seems to be dropping even though I'm keeping to 3k revs until over 500 mls, I know it will go below 30mpg once I start to use the revs.
Could it be I'm running on Sainsburys 95 Oct? The dealer said they use reg. unleaded for everything.
 
Why run an expensive car on the cheapest fuel ?

Try Shell V-Power or if you must go to the supermarket, Tesco 99 octane.

Both give more power and better fuel consumption.

What sort of mpg improvement do you get with 99 octane, I could try Sains 98, as no Tescos nearby.

One thing I have noticed is that it pinks whenever I start it up , move off with a few revs, or when reversing. Do they all do that (is it a variocam or Porsche thing?) or is that a sign it needs higher octane fuel. Isn't it gonna damage the engine if every time I start it up it pinks!
 
You shouldn't get pinking at all.

The car automatically compensates for lower octane fuel by retarding the ignition - it has a knock sensor built in. There should be no discernable "pinking" at any time.

Retarding the ignition means you will not get the best efficiency (power) out of the engine, although this can be a fairly miniscule proportion!

Only you can decide if it's worthwhile, but I'd go for the "brand" pump fuel, with all the additives and cleaners associated with them, rather than supermarket fuel on a regular basis.
 
Yes, I know all modern engines have anti-knock sensors. As you say the difference in performance is miniscule between using 95 and 98 in every day in traffic use. My last few cars, all VW Group, were supposed to use 98 but worked fine on 95 giving better than book mpg and didn't pink. Jap cars pink if not using 98 I recall (Integra R).
My question is does anyone else's 2.7 Variocam engine pinking when starting up, that is just when it fires, as if not I'd best call my OPC and ask a techie as mine does it every time. I did notice when I test drove a Cayman S some years ago and a Boxster S recently they also pinked when pulling away if you didn't use enough revs. and stalled it. So maybe its just me being fussy.

Seems it just occurs momentarily if I stall it and restart, a cold start is fine. I just wondered if it is a characteristic of all Porsche engines? I am sure the C4S the OPC lent me did it as well.
 
Never noticed any kind of pinking from my S and I've not read of it being an issue when I was researching the car before I bought it.
