GT 3 or keep the Turbo

I had a big disappointment today. I have had a deposit down on a Gen 2 GT3 for some time and a letter of intent in place for years and I was expecting an autumn build. However I was told today that my car will not be built until March next year as Porsche are limiting supply far more than with the Gen 1 so my OPC will only get two cars between now and March. This is the first time my OPC has let me down. I was also told that in the last 12 months they were allocated 210 new Porsche cars to sell but in the next 12 months they will get only 95 as Porsche try to balance supply and demand and restore second hand values.

I now have to decide what to do, wait for the GT3 or keep and further modify the Turbo as per Alex L and forget the GT3.

I was at Silverstone yesterday and the Turbo did not disgrace itself with nothing pulling away from it on the hangar straight but the car looses out on the twisty bits (not to mention lack of skill in the driver) so I am tempted to keep the car and modify it to get closer to the GT3 experience. Shame you cant put a car on a diet because it will still be much heavier than a GT3 which makes it less agile in the corners also having hit the rev limiter a couple of times it would be nice to have those extra 2,000 revs but I would miss that Torque!!

Wait for the GT3, no question..

The 997GT3 is special and will be worth the wait. The time will fly and it will arrive for a '10' plate, and just in time for the better weather.

I was at Silverstone yesterday, also in a cobalt blue 997TT. Also hit the rev limiter on several occasions down the hanger straight.I'd be interested to know how your tyres faired? Perhaps I should have let some air out,cos they got pretty sticky and seem to have picked up other folks bits of rubber. Mind you I really enjoyed my self and look forward to the next track day- I was talking to the Guy in the black 997TT who reckoned Castle Combe in two weeks time will be a good one. We were certainly lucky with the weather yesterday. As for a GT3 or Turbo, horses for courses really. Clearly they had more than the edge on me yesterday,my first trackday, but I was very pleased with my effort, I improved as the day went on, particularly taking on board the comments of the instructer. IMO the TT is the most usefull every day sportscar ,comfy, discrete , a good allrounder. So perhaps wait for the new 997TT gen 2? Forgot to check my mpg seamed to get through 1.5 tank fulls. Was yours as thirsty?

I use Michelin Sports Cups for track days so they hold up pretty well. Road tyres will wear quite rapidly especially if they are reasonably new. Michelins advice is to drop the pressures in your tyres for track use. If your normal pressures are 2.3 bar front 2.7 rear then on track you are looking at 2.1 front and 2.3 rear. This because the rears have to cope with a lot of heat. My fuel consumption was 9MPG and I got through two tank fulls so had a good day

9mpg [:D] well done that man [:)]

Bob, I have to say with the GT3 being softened slightly in the 997 form, it possibly should of been my choice.
However I don't track the car as often as you do and I really do enjoy a twisty road on the route to somewhere- in any weather, so for me the Turbo was the right choice in the end.
But the GT3.2 does look to be a stunning machine.
If you're in no rush then like said earlier, GT3 ready for summer 2010 [8D]

however I can imagine the disapointment...
After my buying experience with this Turbo, next time I'd LOI at quite a few dealers...

Bob:

I know how frustrating this is for you. It's very disappointing when you've built yourself up to expect the car sooner than it's being offered but I have to say that I believe it will be worth the wait and you'll be all grins when you get the car.

Get the GT3!

I'd use the turbo for the remainder of the summer & get a lovely new GT3 for the Spring. They should be offering the test days at Silverstone soon for buyers & depositers, so I'm sure the least the dealer can do is get you down there a little earlier as a jesture of good will to try one out. Personally every time I drive mine it's an experience, something that I can't say was true for any of the turbo's I test drove. Defo get the GT3!

GT3 for the track
Turbo for the road personally I would not try to convert a Turbo into a all out track car, not when you can buy the right tool out of the box.

I understand Porsche Bolton may have had a build slot for a GT3 a couple of weeks ago (due to a cancellation), might be worth a phone call. [:)]

Hi Bob

See my PM about your questions.

I would recommend you have a chat with Chris Franklin and he can advise on whether a suspension upgraded Turbo would give you what you are after.

I think you will be happy with either direction you take!

Thanks for all the comments guys. At Alex's suggestion I am going to speak with Chris at Centre Gravity before making up my mind. I am not sure if this agony or ecstacy

Still struggling!! Does this help?

Thats easy then

For track driving have a GT3, if you mostly drive what Walter calls the "open Road" have turbo and if you live in an area with lots of snow/ice have a turbo.

Bob sounds like Walter is suggesting you should have both.... [8D]

No dilemma then[;)]

Problem is that if you were to consider the "both" option you would probably have to look at the GT3RS which is launched today as that will be an even better track car and when you start thinking like that you might as well buy an Ex Cup car and trailer it to track days and before you know it you are racing!!

bob
im in the same position deposit down etc etc but as of yet i have no build date from my opc. im just hoping i get a car at the end, but have you seen the 997gtsrs on autocar look fantastic so maybe ill end up with one of them. ah just got my ear thumped from the boss of the house. good luck in your quest

My OPC told me Porsche are only importing 120 GT 3's in total in the current year which runs to next July. They have been allocated 5 by Porsche all of which have deposits against them. My OPC knows when all their buld dates are. Mine is in March 2010 with physical delivery mid April and mine is the third Gen 2 GT 3 they will get. Your OPC should know by now if you have a build date for year ending July 2010. If not it will depend how many Porsche supply the following year as they seem to work on an annual allocation. They have always restricted supply of the GT cars.

They also told me they are getting just 3 Gen 2 Turbo coupes and 1 Turbo convertible in the same period to July 2010 as Porsche are severely restricting production to boost second hand values which have been hammered. The total number of new cars they will have to sell will be halve what it was in the previous 12 months. Total production wont be halved with cars being released to other markets but it does mean our OPcs will have quite a tough year so will be looking to maximise the return on each car they sell

Bob, like the thinking [:D]

On a more practical note, a GT3 you can drive to the track and drive home plus use for Sunday morning blats from the House, saves the turbo for touring or longer distance runs (Scotland, Wales, Europe) and winter/ bad weather[:D].

While cheaper than the ex cup car, this does pre suppose one can afford to buy the GT3 without having to trade the current car in as equity (I wish)
