GT3 BBS Split Rim Refurb Options

ORIGINAL: alanchester

Just got a quote from Exel for £700 including exchange wheels.

That's ridiculous. The last wheels I had done in Glenrothes were £50 each. I daresay split rims will cost more, but I'd be surprised if they were anything like that.

My thoughts exactly, was also quoted £450 but I have no details of their process and would also need to get the wheels to them in England with no loan wheels being offered.

Will send Powdertec an email?

Exel quoted £600 for me, but the car would have to stand on axle stands for the week until the wheels were couriered off to be restored.

Glenrothes were £350 in their initial quote to me, which seems very reasonable.

If anyone is still following this topic - I've booked the car in at Powdertec, will keep you updated on the results when it's done!

They have a special February discount running, and can do the diamond-turned rim and also a full chemical dip, crack test, split and rebuild of both parts of the wheel. Sounds promising.

Yes please show us the results and tell of your experience with Powdertec.

PM Sent with a couple of questions, hope you don't mind.

Looking forward to your outcome as I need to get mine done soon.
How long will it take to turn them around?

Alan.

Alan - it's a 3 day turnaround on the split rims, since they need to check they've bonded properly again etc.

Alan I have a set of turbo twist 18" wheels that will fit your car if you need a set on loan, no tyres, but you would need to take them off anyway,

You are keeping us in suspense here, have you got your wheels back yet.
Keen to see the outcome as mine need done sometime soon.

Alan.

Picked mine up today from Powdertec Glasgow and I am very pleased. Bargin for £300!

Rubbish pic but by the light had gone by the time I got them home and fitted.

I went for a chrome rim with factory finish inner in glourious easy maintenence powder coating topped off with new centre caps.

I will be at the breakfast run this Sunday if anyone wants to inspect. Powder coating might not be for the purist but it's definitely value for money.

Powdertec themselves were a pleasure to deal with and drama free.

Alan - they're looking good. Excellent VFM.

Mine are due back shortly - will post up this weekend!

Stopped off to collect the car this afternoon - excuse the quick iPhone snaps:

As you can see, it has the diamond-turned outer "basket" and the original silver shade (but powder coated instead of wet-finished) on the inner. Work even extended to the centre caps, which was an unexpected bonus, so now the shade matches across.

I had to leave my car on their premises due to logistics, but they were happy to accommodate this. Unsure how I'd feel were the car more valuable than an early 986, so I'd bear this in mind if you were thinking about getting the work done.

When Lepson's, Exel, etc charge £600+ (and extra if you supply the wheels with tyres or want the centre caps done), this place has the skills to do a decent job at a much more palatable price, a bit closer to home.

Look nice had that style on 996 C4 Cab a few years ago ...just one thing I noticed on yours and Alan's the inner rim looks dull unwashed look are they not painted /finished the same as the face ? or am I just OCD

Yes Brian they are finished on the inside, you'll have to excuse our poor lighting & photography but the studio was fully booked.
