GT4 - PCCB or Normal Steel

I went for steels in the end for similar reasons to above, plus still a bit nervous using PCCBs hard on track after some issues in the past. Also seems daft but I do prefer the red callipers on a yellow car.

 
I don't know why the rumour still persists that conventional brake discs are manufactured from steel-they are made from cast iron for many reasons which includes their heat resistance ,cost,easy machinability,the various grades available,stability, friction coefficients,etc & their general corrosion resistance although this latter feature hasn't helped some of the recent models where inside faces have tended to rust if not dried out before storage & that problem is more likely down to the alloying /refining of the metal spec which will have reduced the carbon content,& therefore the rust resistance.

The driver of the new 981 Spyder was lapping quickly. Probably not as quick as Chris but still one of the quickest who attended the day. He mentions on pistonheads that he was getting a soft pedal. Are the new Spyder steel brakes different to the GT4 steels?

 
I believe they are 991S 6 piston 340mm/34mm brakes. I have these on mine and it may be that his were new and not bedded in? I get some softness at the end of track day runs (but they recover quickly) and will upgrade fluid this winter, but I have run mine for 10k miles inc 11 track days with standard 991S pads, disks and fluid so they do hold up well.

nothing like the same and OEM pads will over heat very quick and are not a track pad.

GT4 has 380mm with massive 6 pots with more of a track pad.

 
For my choice as a keen track day driver, I would probably also go with steel brakes on the GT4 as you have done CarreraGTS.

I've experienced PCCB on a CR at Silverstone and they are truly fabulous, but the GT3 spec steel brakes on the GT4 seem perfectly good enough without the negatives of pre-warming/cooling down, chipping discs when wheel changing, and replacement pad costs. Brake dust is not a problem......it washes off!

It's all down to personal preferences and money at the end of the day.

I'm really envious of you guys with your GT4's. Enjoy them whichever brakes they come with!

I must concede that the iron disc brakes (thanks Colin !) of the GT4 are completely different from the standard Cayman or even the new 3.8 Spyder brakes.

Another factor for me was disc corrosion --- or rather the lack of this with PCCB's.

But again, there is no right or wrong answer to this question. The exceptionally oversized nature of the PCB's should add longevity --- time will tell :)
