Halford's "Super Brilliance" bulbs

As you might have read on an earlier thread I needed to replace a bulb in my headlamp.

Anyway went to local halfords atfer a discussion with one of their "experts !?!" I bought one of their "super brilliance" bulbs. Reasonable deal at present, buy one get one free. £15 each. These are excellent - far better light than before and very close to the quality of the BMW's xenons. It is advised to change both bulbs if moving to these and for the current deal it's cheaper then buying one normal bulb.

I always felt the lights on the 944 were marginal anyway but these bulbs really make a difference - my recommendation for the week!!

Glad you think they are worth it. I to bought a pair for the Porsche on a Halfords BOGOF deal when I got some for the Focus even though I didn't need them, but due to the deal thought i'd gett hem anyway and put them on the shelf until I do need them. But if they get the seal of approval from you then I might just go ahead and fit them. They certainly work on the Focus though they were pretty bright before hand so didn't notice a massive difference - but anything should be better than what i've got at the moment.
 
Might be tempted to swap to these also as the lights on mine really are quite dim...

what about the 90/100w bulbs that Halfrauds also sell. Has anyone tried these in their 944? Is the alternator/ wiring up to the additional load?
 
I fitted some Osram equivalents in mine - same wattage but a whiter light and thus brighter than standard ones.

Did wonder about the 100w ones, but didn't want to melt the wiring or upset the local police[;)]
 
This is going to sound daft but....
One way to make sure you have decent lights on a 924/944 is to clean the lenses. Because the lenses are not seen until you switch the lights on they are often overlooked when washing the car.[8|]

And, if the car's done motorway miles at night the lenses will be stonechipped to hell. Possibly worth new lenses rather than overloading the wiring with higher-wattage bulbs if this is the case.
 
I used 90W dipped / 130W mains in an old MG MAestro years ago (don't laugh - they were good hot hatches) and they lasted no time at all and melted my stalk [:eek:]

Wouldn't put them or similar near a 944.

I did however stick the (award winning) Osram SilverStars in the S2 and the difference was marked! You'll get them for approx £12 a set on ebay - bargain and a great upgrade.

Incidentally - the "same wattage - higher output" of these bulbs comes from thinner winding wire to concentrate more light in a smaller area. The total light output therefore isn't greater, but the more concentrated windings are situated within the bulb body to "push" the beam pattern out further. In theory they are therefore more fragile and shorter of life... but at £12 a pair that didn't concern me.
 
Higher wattage bulbs aren't 'E' marked so illegal in this country. But if you do want to fit them then the easiest thing to do is power then via a relay (direct from battery). Saves having to fit higher rated fuses and upgraded wiring. The stalk won't get fried. Also running the power directly from the battery improves performance of the bulbs (much less voltage drop). My Golf Mk1 has had the relay modification but using standard 55/60 bulbs. I think someone has fitted 100w main beam bulbs in my 944 but don't know how to check them.[8|]

Fred's right. I'd never run a bulb of anything more than standard rating through the original harness - if you are going for a bigger wattage, you need an uprated loom or relays. Given the resistance of the standard loom, you will get a significant voltage drop before the bulb, therefore it is quite possible that the bulb is not seeing more than 9 or 10v, so a relay conversion can give a useful increase in lux* with the standard bulbs.

If you want to check the rating of the bulbs then take them out and look at the base. It will be stamped on there - standard is 60/55 (60w main, 55w dipped.)

I'm worried you're making light of a serious situation here.I thought the SiverStar bulbs shed much more light, but it could just be a filament of my imagination. [&:]
 
Fortunately I made 'light' of the previous puny puns. Obviously appletonn has been following in his father's footsteps (with his dad's short little legs that won't be too much of a problem for him[:)]). So, before this posting gets too 'bulb'ous I'll say adios to you 'dim'wits.

Wire we going down the pun route again? If you want to see some good ones 'switch' to the spark plug posts. I thought I'd 'relay' this information though; I tried higher wattage bulbs in my 924 'lux' with limited success. I was h'ampere'd by the alternators output which just let the 'volt'age drop closer to 12v so net/net there was little to chose. I always found that new reflectors gave the best improvement on my beetle. I bet the reflectors on my 924 T are the originals, so would be as shiny as any other silvered object, only partially protected from the elements for 25 years. Maybe time to replace them, and the lamps. Bulbs grow in the garden.
 
I once fitted a pair of Crystal Clear headlights to my 944, using standard 60/55 bulbs. Illumination was excellent but the 'Chav' look was too much so they were removed for a standard pair but with brightish[8|] bulbs in them. They have always passed the MOT, the tester has never mentioned the brightness of them.

This might be letting the cat out of the bag but here go's take your membership card and driving license to Halfords and some not all will do you a trade card in return the differance in cost is around half. So a good saving by the way this is only on motor parts the bulds would be 6.99 I asked.[;)][;)]
