Handling worries

I have a 2007MY 987 so under manufacturers warranty of course
Not sure If I'm imagining this

Up to a couple of months ago I found the handling pretty neutral, butrar more recently I've found the handling a little strange.

The front end seems a little light somehow and not as stiff as it did- I also seem to be getting touches of both understeer and oversteer (on dry roads) when I'm not particularly pushing it. Also on motorways I occasianally seem to be fighting it a little bit to keep it in a straight line.

As I said I'm not sure whether I am imagining this- its certainly not undriveable , I just have a little less confidence in the handling when I want to go a bit quicker.

Does this possibly sound like a spring or shock absorber problem maybe ??

 
First thing to do would be to get a full alignment check. A small amount of toe-out (front or rear) can cause the problems you are describing.
 
I have 17" wheels with contis on the front- lots of tread, brand new michelin pilot sports on the rear.
I check the tyre pressures every week - and found they were fine.

On these forums there seems to be 2 schools of thought about wheel alignment


Either - "only Porsche centres can do it " or "Porsche centres never get it right"

Obviously if I was to get an alignment check done I'd rather just get it done at a tyre place because this would be cheaper- any thoughts ?

Do you think there is any chance I could get it done at the Porsche centre because the car is so new ?



By the way- the affect I'm seeing is pretty similar to underinflated front tyres
 
The Contis and Michelins will not work well together. You should only have the same make all round.

The handling problems didn't start when the brand new tyres were put on the rear did they?
 
I'm not really sure- I thought it was OK mixing tyres as long as it wasn't on the same axel ?

I put Michelins on the rear because the original contis only lasted 8000 miles
 
It should say something like this in the tyres sectionof your owners manual:
"Only tires with the same make and with the
same specification code (e.g. "N0"Âť, "N1"Âť...)
can be mounted"

The tyres are designed to work with those of the same make and design (with the exception of Pirelli Assimetrico fronts and Direzionale rears - which are designed to work together in that combination).
I know from experience how different the car feels with Contis all round and with Michelins all round. In my opinion you will benefit tremendously by fitting Michelins to the front as well.

You could always advertise the part worn fronts for sale - they work very well on 944s.

I would temper that to Michellin and Contis will work differently together. My car came with Michelins and when the rears wore out they were replaced with Contis. I never had any issues running both types on road or track.

In addition I've never had any issues running different N ratings either.

The Golden Rule is not to mix on the same axle.

In this case not IMHO but borne out by several thousand miles of experience.
 
As the front's are part worn. it makes sense to change those.
I couldn't get on with the Contis myself. On the other hand John loves them. Maybe they suit the 2.7 with Sport suspension (John's car) better than the 3.2 with sport suspension (my car)?

I thought that the Continental was a harder tyre but I could be wrong.

I've got conti's front and rear. No problems to report - handles great. Although i do have some vibration at high speeds. I had wondered if this was due to the alignment.

Does anyone know who does 4 wheel alignment near Leeds?
 
"Michelins and Pirellis are described as "sports" tires. The others are "all-around" (Bridgestone) or "comfort" (Yokohama and Continental). So choose the tire that best describes your driving style. If you get really annoyed at a harsh ride, get one of the "comfort" tires. If performance is more important to you, get one of the "sports" tires. If you can't decide, get the "all-around" tires " -

Above quote from somewhere of the internet regarding Porsche's view on the tyres - may explain your handling woes. Also don't forget that these tyres don't work well at low temparatures such as experienced last few weeks, and I remember seeing that "winter" tyres are recommended. I have noticed more skittish behaviour recent early morning on my Michelins and ABS kicking in more often !

The only reason that I have bought Conti's for the last 7 years is that they have always been the cheapest N rated tyre that my local Protyre outfit could provide. [&:]

(Don't tell Mark that though)....
