Hard Pipe To Intercooler Hoses

My red car runs MAP(German system if i remember)- doesn't need stand alone..worked without skipping a beat for a few years now....

endless ribbing from the MAP boyz

Hmm that's strange , I've blown off my hoses a few times now and never broken down. As long as i stay off boost the car runs fine .. and yes I have a MAF....[:)][:)]

Pete

same here - although "off boost" means zero boost - as soon as the turbo starts spinning than it all goes horribly wrong..

This hose blowing off thing that seems to be happening to people would be totally cured with those clip/clamps i keep going on about!!!!They really work and then you can boost with confidence...!Promax got me mine, only one needed each side of the connections to the intercooler....If you are running big boost and actually spank your car you need these clips!!!

I don't understand the fuss with these hoses... been running 16psi with all the original hardware after the turbo and no hose has blown yet, even with a dual BB SPS turbo that does blow an awful lot more air than a standard K26.

Reason we went for the special clips we found at higher boost levels the standard clips could every now and then blow off,my other car that runs similar boost to yours nearly at 1.1 bar(16psi?) boost the standard clips are totally fine, the red car is running at 1.5 bar at max, hence the need for the teeth type,no blow off now.

Thom these cars are talking boost pressures of about 20psi and over [8D]

At our weedy boost levels on 3L cars we could hold our pipes on with blu tack [;)], I dread to think what would happen at higher boost levels []

Mark, how do you monitor knock?
If you don't then you would be surprised how much inaudible knock a more or less standard car begins to make above 18psi.

My mate Sly has also been running 20psi of boost with the original rubber hoses and they haven't failed yet.

I've blown a hose off twice in 4 years - both times because I had the intake piping in bits & failed to do up one of the clips properly. If I leave things alone the car seems to work very well... [:D]

If you clamp it up tight enough it probably doesnt matter what hose you use. The shape of the standard moulded rubber hoses probably makes them better than a plain silicone hose at resisting boost pressure.

Tom - regarding EBC's one of the finest ones you can buy and is well used and known in the 944 Turbo community worldwide is the Apexi AVC-R [;)]

Hey Scott, thanks for the suggestion. Ive had a look at the AVC-R and its a pretty slick bit of kit isnt it. I like the idea of RPM, speed and gearing based boost control. I remember you saying that the promax chips couldn't handle changing boost levels. This would imply that I can only set the AVC-R to the current boost level (1.2 bar wasnt it) and cant play about with all the other clever stuff. Is that right? Know of any chips that can handle changing boost levels?

My rubber hose connections to the intercooler are standard..?( but clips non standard),car runs sweet, just come back from 1200 mile trip to ring and spa, just added petrol(lots of) and oil (lots less -switched to mobil 1),all good.[:D]

I'm not aware of any other piggy back MAP systems so the answer is probably - yes.

Vitesse do a MAP now for their piggyback system called the V-flex...[:)]

You can still use all the clever stuff ( except speed as the apexi can not match the 944 pulses for speed, but who watchs speed on a boost control anyway???)Tom just keep max boost to 1.2bar, you'll be impressed with the Apexi... I am..[8D][8D][8D]

How would you describe the difference the apexi made to your car?

Using one word......AWESOME! , they say it's the best in the world?? I wouldn't know about that but to me it was worth every penny. I did a lot of research before bying the Apexi, I only came across two criticism's, Complicated to set up and not the fastest solenoid out there although pretty close? Saying it's complicated is rubbish , once installed the car started firsat time and ran like a dream , for setting up there is a lot of info on the web to help you. I set mine up to start as reccommended by OZ951, you can find his info using google. As for the solenoid I fail to see the relevance of this, it's very fast and keeps a solid boost line no matter what level boost you choose. There is a lot to the Apexi which perhaps is why some think it's complicated but since the car runs perfectly from the start it gives you plenty of time to play with the settings without having to spend lot's of time trying to get the thing to run in the first place...:)

Pete

Do you need a dual port wastegate? I can't see why you would.

Does the solenoid have a vacuum line as well as boost.

I would reccommend getting a DPW, that should be one of the first mods IMHO along with a remap to make the most of it. Many years ago when I first installed my DPW and had the car mapped it made 282bhp with those mods alone, that's 62bhp gain for those two items and the ability to hit the red line in all gears.

As for your second question the solenoid is connected to the boost line.. not sure what you mean by being connected to a vac line also??
