Hard top

ok John, you did ask.....

short version, my garage door fell off its hinges.

Was taking the car on a trip to Norway and wanted to leave the roof somewhere where it wouldn't end up on eBay! Got a new garage door but not the motivation to carry the roof back down from the second floor

Know what you mean - my hard top lives on the ground floor while the car's in the middle!

I think Dapster was meaning "it's fugly" []

There's a far better looking one available from a company in france - looks like a Cayman after it's fitted!

When |I had my Boxter I was also thinking about the hard top... I tried the standard one and I also saw the one from France.
First a general comment... No matter how good you fit it you still feel it is not the integral part of the body... You hear some squeaks etc. I do not know if you use your Boxster as a daily driver all year round. If not - the rug top is quite OK for occasional drive in winter, you do not actually gain anything with the hard top (IMHO).

As for the french one... It looks very nice in pictures... In reality it's quite ugly, at least a mon avis....

In my search for a Zenith Blue hard top, I have come across this hardtop company

http://www.boxster-hardtop.co.uk/

It looks to be more expensive on the face of it than from others that I have seen, but it gives an interesting roof line towards the rear. I'm not sure I like the shape of the quarter lights though.

What do you boys think?

Elegant! - my a£$%

Get a proper one.

Thanks for your comments. I think that just about sums up my thoughts.

I think if i had to keep the car outside during the winter then a hardtop would be more practical, but I'm wondering if i really need one at all.

I bought my car with one as I knew no better. If you use your car all year round it is nice to use it the winter but 5 months of being folded really takes it out on the hood. It needs to be spotless when you fold it otherwise any dust acts as a piece of emry cloth and scuffs up your canvas along the folds.

The canvas hood is able to cope with a UK winter but you should be able to pick a second hand top at a reasonable price.

I knew no better !!!!!........I actually think that the hard top really differentiates the look of the boxster through the winter. I bought one from ebay about 12 months ago and think that its a great addition to the car and protects the hood during the wet and dirty Summer....I mean winter months. For a few hundred quid there isnt alot more you can do to change the look of your as much as putting a hard top on it.

The lengthening of the roof to meet the boot line and addition of quarter lights not only gives the car a more 'Porsche' look but adds real day to day practicality, making overtaking safer and parking easier.

Who are they kidding. If you want a hardtop, get a porsche one. The fittings are in the car as standard (i believe), and it looks like it's part of the car. I don't know how much a porsche one will set you back, though.

I quite agree on the looks.

However unless you are meticulous when stowing the hood before fitting the hard top, 5 months daily driving with it on will damage the hood not protect it.

I wouldnt say you have to be meticulous when putting the hood down for a long period, you just need top give it a little time and consideration. I wouldnt say i'm a geek when it comes to looking after my porsche but I do like to take some time over things and it shows. If you want to put a hard top on you need to do a bit of prep work like buy the felt screen protector and make sure you put rubber plugs on the prongs of the hardtop when fitting, also just make sure the hood is clean and dry before folding away. If you do all of these your hood will be in as good a condition when you bring it out next spring as when you put it away.

PS The hardtop fitment kits are not standard, but i fitted mine myself in about an hour and are available for about £50 from Porsche.

If you use your car, day in day out -365 - meticulous for the reasons already mentioned.
