Harness advice needed

I'm revisiting the idea of fitting some harnesses to my car. The last ones I had were the bolt in type and were pretty poor (since been removed). This time they will be attached to eye bolts and will clip in and out as and when they are needed. I only want 4 point and the ones I am considering are these:

Schroth Clubman II ASM saloon

The shoulder straps will go over a harness bar and be attached to eyebolts in the rear seat belt points. The only trouble is the pic of the harness makes me wonder if the shoulder straps will be long enough? Does any one know if they would be suitable?

p.s. I already have harness ready seats in the shape of the Recaro pole positions.
 
Standard shoulder strap length at max adjustment is 6' 2" or 188cms. You can of course have straps made up to exact requirements but I don't know any costs for this. There is a Chris at Demom Tweeks on the motorsport team who has all the details. Something I had been thinking of myself. Let me know Steve if you want a direct number for him where he can give you info on manufacturers whio can provide custom strap lengths. Cheers
 
Cheers Marcus, that sounds plenty long enough to fit a 964. Where did you find the measurements? I got these measurements from Chris at DT. Personally, I don't think there's much in it - it's personal choice I guess. I used to rally co-drive a fair bit in the British Historic Rally Championship in an MG and the Pirelli Irish Tarmac Championship in a 911, and if I remember anything it's what ever colour that worked best!
 
He he...like the colour angle as a good reason [:D]. I think I will go red to match the decals [:)] I think I may stick with the Clubman because Schroth's own advice is that 2 inch lap belts (clubman) are safer than 3 inch lap belts (Profi III): http://english.schroth.com/racing/technology/50mm.php
 
Steve Why not just fix the straps directly to the harness bar - this is how they were in my 911T - shorter is better ? Ian
 
It's only a harness guide bar Ian (no cage in mine) so doesn't have the required strength for a frontal impact. It's there just to ensure the shoulder straps are routed at the correct angle.
 
Steve, talk to Jen at MSAR safety (tell her I sent you), she did the 3inch belts for my NGT, I got schroth belts, she was excellent for fitting options. I think I had the profi II 6 slipstop. things to note. 3inch over 2inch always! Consider one getting one that is hans compliant. Also, you may get a deal with belts coming up to FIA dates, which wont concern you on trackdays I got cash off as the passenger belts expire a year earlier than the driver belts. Jen can take you through the pro's and cons of mounting options including flexibility on the eye bolts. Also the fitment is quite important if not using a harness bar behind the seat. Lots to think about when choosing belts! I think I put a thread on it somewhere in the RS sections.
 
Thanks Hugh. I've found that thread but there are no contact details for Jen in there? Oh...and shoulder straps will definitely be 3 inch but I thought that article by Schroth themselves (link above) about 2 inch waist straps was interesting food for thought. I also like Schroth's 'anti sub-marine' technology that they've put into their recent belts.
 
http://www.msar-safety.com/ Sorry misread your post - yes, 2" on the waist. I'd always get a 6point harness for the anti submarine belts. What I like about schroth profi is that the sub belts have their own clip which makes it easier to put all together. I've got the other belts in the caterham, and they are very fiddly to put on in comparison. I'll PM you Jen's phone number

Steve, the 'guide bar' you have in the rear there, is this a permanent fixture? I can't remember when I had a poke around at Curburough. I assume it might be if only from a safety pov on a frontal impact (i.e. forces acting on the bar from the straps being pulled forward potentially knocking the bar off its' mounting). Other than that it seems a good set up for occasional track use without compromising the interior as a whole too much.
 
I took the harness guide bar out when I removed the harnesses. It only takes 10 minutes or so to put in and out. You're right that it was not attached at Curborough. Its role is to ensure that the shoulder straps are at the right angle. The straps are anchored to the rear seat belt points. Without a guide bar the straps would be at the wrong angle which would mean in a frontal impact the downward force could crush your spine.
 
I finally got round to sorting out the harnesses for the car. While the gearbox was out for the clutch upgrade Unit 11 put eyebolts in the tunnel for me which are secured be reinforcement plates inside the tunnel:

Are you really happy with the belts going over the unreinforced bar and and down at such an angle? Check Schroth advice on this. Hugh -you and your split pins -frankly after spending a large part of today fitting new seats and belts I couldn't be bothered!!!![:D] And just how many places are there for the odd stray bolt and washer to hide in when you drop them in a stripped out car.......I lost count......[&:] PS Steve -you gotta change that interior colour!!!![8D]

You are of course right Melv. The Schroth instructions state that the shoulder strap should be horizontal or no more than 20 degrees downward. Hence I won't use the harnesses without a guide bar. However, they make no mention of the straps having an upward angle. The bar I've got is made specifically for 911s by Stable Energies in the States. I've not measured it but I guess when over my shoulder it's somewhere between 20 and 30 degrees upwards.

sorry on the shot, down by the side of the seat, you can see the spring loaded clip, where the harness fixes to the eye bolt. These buckles have a small hole through which you are supposed to put a split pin to prevent the harness ever coming off the eye bolt. Maybe quite unlikely, but you would be amazed at how many harnesses you see in race cars without these fitted! Does that make more sense?
