have have just got this report

For my own clarification - shouldn't the rev limiter stop you going into Ranges 3 & 4 if you miss a change or blip too enthusiastically while heeling and toeing on a down shift? Isn't the only way to hit those ranges to change down at too high a speed (eg, the classic 5th to 2nd error)?

Yes it's a miss shift, can be done in any gear if it knocks the revs above 7.7k

But doesn't the rev limiter prevent that? I thought the only way to reach those rev ranges was for the car to be in the wrong gear, so that the engine is driven too fast by the back wheels. Is this not right?

I think the rev limiter only works if you try to rev too high using the throttle directly ??

A change from 5th to 2nd as you say is a different scenario, taking the throttle out of the equation and leading to a potential over rev situation.

As Mr D says, a mis-shift down change will buzz the engine beyond the rev limiter. The rev limiter only works on in-gear revs, as you do when you hold a gear to the red line.

Botched downshifts, e.g. engaging First instead of Third when heeling and toe-ing at the 50 yd marker at the end of Hangar Straight before Stowe, will punt the revs to Cloud Nine.

Rev-limiters can't beat physics. The wheels rule.

Hope this clarifies.

what do you think a miss shift is ! ie. just what you are saying, one has changed into the wrong gear !, it's the same thing, but does not have to be a big 6th to 3rd or 4th to 1st for a rev range 3 to happen, I am sure if one did that you would have ranges in 5 and 6 also and pistons sticking outside the engine !

It can be done in any gear, most people quote the big mis shifts gates.

4th to 3rd will give you a range 3 readout if you do it too early, range 3 is only from 7700 to 7900.

ranges 1 and 2 will trigger just going up the gears bouncing off the limiter as range 1 is only 7200 and < 7500

And a Cayman GTS will goto 7400rpm before the limiter cuts in or there abouts so can also trigger range 2 on red line sports mode shifts.

Range 3 used to be ok with Porsche for 40 odds years, it's only the last 3 years Porsche now poo poo range 3 triggers which is stupid as the engines can goto 7700rpm no issue.

Range 4 and you have messed up some where > 7900 and < 8400 and hence Porsche want to do a leak down test.

range 5 and 6 you have prob blown up the engine and Porsche want to know how, this is the 4th to 1st sort of mess.

UPDATE i have taken my car in to Guildford Porsche for the 111 point check to find out that they will not put a warranty on the car because it has a problem with a print out on the range, so they wanted me to pay £750 to do a compression test on it to make sure that no damage has not been done, so i rang the dealer that i got the car from for them to say that they will get it sent to Brooklands Porsche. Just had a call from Brooklands to say that it is not needed because they have found out that it has been done, after they done some homework on the Porsche computer system and was done after the reading was done. So i think i will not be going back to Guildford Porsche because they clearly want to con me out of money

I wonder if you can refuse the car and get all your money back due to buying a car with rev range 3 and 4.

I bet one could if you wanted to. (if you got it from an OPC)

or did you NOT buy from a Porsche OPC, as it is odd they had to call Brooklands Porsche if it was an OPC.

You already know a dealer like Guildford Porsche would not buy the car from you, so you are stuck with a car which is going to be very hard to sell even back to Porsche.

be interesting to know where you got the car from.

You need the "compression test" results on Porsche headed paper going forward as this will kick you in the arse every where.

So far to me it looks like Brooklands was not allowed to sell it and farmed it out to a 3rd party dealer where you got it.

correct ?
