Head light conversion

Ok people I am getting Fed up with the candles for headlights and have seen led plug in conversions that just plug in
Has any body done this cheap conversions

Hi Paul,

Be very careful fitting cheap HID or LED conversions. My understanding of the laws (please correct me if I'm wrong folks!!) are that any HID's and LED's have to be self leveling and have a headlight washer, which obviously older Porsche's don't have the self leveling part. You can do an upgrade but it has to be a full headlight swap. RPM Technik do a full kit but it isn't cheap.

I had the same thoughts about an upgrade but decided to go for the highest powered H4 bulb I could find and try that first. I went for Philips RacingVision H4 headlight bulbs. They made a massive difference but supposedly don't last quite as long as standard H4 bulbs. 5000 miles in and they are still going strong.... and for £18 on Amazon it might be worth a gamble first!

Osram Night Breakers with a relay in the circuit (Alan Kennedy's your man for the latter) or a Classic Retrofit fuse box which includes one but is more expensive than a simple relay.

When I had my 911 3.2 this was the modification I undertook. Yes it is a bit pricey but I thought it was good value for money when you see the fuse board in situ. I also changed the small fuse holder in the engine compartment. The fuse boards individual fuses have each an indicator light which illuminates when a fuse is blown. Blade fuses are for me the way to go.

The LumeTechnik LED Conversion is a great idea but can be very expensive.

 
As Ray says, If going for brighter bulbs you need to fit the direct feed relay (http://www.jwesteng.com/shop/911/16-911-headlight-relay-kit-74-89.html) and fuse the ligth switch (provides more power and protects the wiring loom) otherwise you can overload the loom which has been known to catch fire in a few bur rarae cases.

Also a good clean or refresh of your headlight reflective element (the mirror bit) with the above mods makes a significant difference to their brightness.

Were they a straight swap or did you have to do extra work? Could they overload the circuit? Regards, Andy.
 
LEDS are fine, get decent ones, I have had a few sets from Claasiccarleds.co.uk, great service. They take less current and are a direct fit in 2 minutes

II did a straight swap and they ran fine for 18 months or so before I sold that car. If I was doing it again I would probably look at fitting the relay as suggested above. I've got new 3.2 recently and will probably look to do this.
