Headlamp Upgrade

Has anybody any experience with an HID upgrade for their pride and joy or any other recommendation for a better performing light system. I'm finding that my 29 year old lamps somewhat lacking

I would not condone the adding of any xenon or angel eye type mods, though I would certainly look into replacing the bulbs the with the very best available on the market today and you should "see" a big difference.

My 951 is sunny day use only, so I cannot offer any practical experience on how big a difference good bulbs will make, but I am sure you will be surprised...

Funnily enough I was going to ask what cars have the best headlights, and see if I could get them to fit my daily S2 if there is any concensus. That said, my Turbo headlights are superb. My S2 headlights are far from great. That said, they have both covered at least 150k miles, probabl 300k miles, are very chipped, the reflectors tarnished, and bulbs past their best. I would also say wires corroded, but I have replaced the loom, as I knew that was a fact, and it has made a big difference alone. New loom is via relays and fuses straight from the alternator. Apparently conventional halogen bulbs really don't like reduced voltages (look on this forum somewhere for an explanation - it is where I learned it and decided to upgrade the loom).

I run night breakers which are better than standard however there is definitely room for improvement. I know the purists amongst us will frown but the light is better with hid's although the pattern you see will be a little fragmented. I notice in the states you can buy 7" round light units with a projector built in and I have wondered what these would be like in a 944 with hids.

I was looking at Osram Night Breakers for both my 944's and my 964. These are recommended by the 964 lads so presume they will be good on the 944's?

Also get your lenses machine polished to remove years of surface grime which will be reducing the clarity of the glass [:)]

Thing is the light omitted is not too bad until something more modern is heading towards you running projected xenons, whatever bulbs you are running just can't compete with what's coming towards you.

You owe me a beer.

Forgive me, but I have never felt the need to compete in light output with anything coming towards me on the roads. Am I missing something?

It's certainly never concerned me, no. At night, the more light there is the better (as long as it's not dazzling me) so I can't think it's a bad thing.

I put some night breakers in a few weeks ago, definitely give better light than the old ones I replaced and the lights look white now instead of yellow. Can't complain at 14 quid a pair.

A VW Golf Mk1/Mk2 re-wire kit will help no end. Anything will work better with 12v instead of the 9v-10v that youre probably delivering.

I tend to disagree. The trend towards very bright white lighting in modern cars just ruins any sort of night vision my eyes have and I tend to find myself driving slower and slower as I can't see the road ahead because of the glare from oncoming cars [&o]

Absolutely ... hence my caveat about not being dazzling!

I take your point about it not ruining your night vision, but I've never found this to be a problem as long as the light is reflected off something (a road surface, or another car for instance). It IS a problem if you look into the headlights of another car, which is why badly-aligned lights are so dangerous.
