I am a plonker...I was "pulling" instead of "pushing".. Sorry to waste your time..just that I had a problem on a '88 carrera that was a pig to resolve ...thought I was in for the same again..

Thanks for the quick response...Merry XMAS all

well mine work now and again []

when I finaly get around to fitting the Tech Art Brake cooling duct kit (i.e. front bumper will come off) then I'll have a look at getting it sorted !!

Maurice,

Yes, I'm operating the switch correctly (always use to work anyway!). I haven't checked anything yet, and don't have any info. with me so don't know which fuse it is. If you happen to know I'd be grateful.

Just thought I'd check on here for any info. before I start into it.

Cheers/John

Mine have also stopped working. I was thinking about a similar post to gain peoples experiences, so look forward to reading these.

With me, the relay went a couple of years ago. After hours of trying to trace the fault it was a £30 for a new relay. If I was you, I'd try to swap out the relay with one of the others and see if that fixes it. (there are identical ones in the fuse box)

Thanks to all for the input. Fuse is fine, and I can't find a relay in there that's the same, so I guess some more investigation is required. Will take a look this weekend when I have more time.

John,
I had to have a new pump fitted a few years ago, which fixed problem. Mine had coroded and seized. It is one of those things I did not use much, but now test it regularly. Pump not expensive but I had it fitted by JZ as it was one of the things they did during a service.

Hi John / Chaps

Im having a problem with my 993 C4 headlamp washers too.
They just seem to work randomly (but typically never when i most need them to)
I always try them with engine running and headlamps on.
ive pulled out the relay and had a look inside it for dry joints etc and it looks ok.
I cant seem to find an identical relay to swap it with as an experiment, and trying to find the pump itself is proving difficult.

Any ideas ?

Many Thanks

Karl.

The main dealer couldn`t fix mine either but I managed it using a pin to clear the polish filled washers!

Mine are also intermittent, have worked twice since I've had her! Think I'll change the switch on the stalk/steering wheel, can anyone tell me the best way to do this?
Thanks & happy new year.

Easiest way to check what's what is to remove the passenger side headlight, (a doddle) and in the hole left by the light you'll find the the washer tank and the two motors that run the system. One for the 'screen the other for the headlights. If one works, the other doesn't, switch the motor plugs and if the motor headlights wash when you try the screen wash or visa versa you know its the motor. They can be freed off as they seize but its fiddly. Just pull the motor out (its just held in place by the grommet in the tank) and replace with a new one from Europarts etc. You'll need a new pipe clamp as the chances are you need to destroy the old one getting it off. A few pence from Porsche.

Brilliant advice GR many thanks indeed.
I'll have a look at that when i get a chance. At least it saves me trying to take the steering wheel etc to bits to check the switch.
Will keep you posted.
PS one other question totally off topic. Mine is a 1996N C4 (registered 29/3/06) how do i find out if it is a Varioram model ?

Cheers
Karl.

Pretty easy. If when you open the engine lid you're looking at an aluminium intake manifold, you have varioram. If however the intake is black plastic, it's pre vario. I think at '96, yours will be varioram. It's useful to make sure it works however. Sit in the car, open a window and turn the ignition on. You should hear a loud "click". If not, your varioram needs a look at.

Mines definitely a varioram then - thanks for the tip.

Re. Headlamp Washers
Found the pump at the weekend and tried to swap the electrical connection with the windscreen washer connector to check whether the fault lies with the pump. Unfortunately they are slightly different fitments so this was not possible. I suppose the next step would be to get a meter and see if there is any current coming through the connector. I'll probably have to wait until next weekend to try it though. Will keep you posted.

Cheers for now

Karl.

All,

Just a quick update - I replaced the relay (actually quite some time ago now!) and all is fine. For once an easy fix...!

Cheers/John

Mine work when they feel like it, which isn't that often. Usually when they've not been used for a while, they'll work once or twice and then go back to sleep. I presume there's something clogging the jet which unclogs itself over time and then gets reclogged when the pressure pushes the clog back in.

The only time I use them though is when a car is too close behind at speed - a good misting goes over the top and hits their windscreen, they soon back off.

I stopped using them to clean the lights as the de-icer either leaves too much residue or makes them p[ick up more dirt (dunno which), they're cleaner if I don't use the jet; they get a wipe once a week on my way past and that keeps them clean enough.

Hi All,

My headlamps washers were working intermittently. Had them checked at last service and was advised new relay required. Had new one fitted (Part £31.34). Headlamp washers now working fine!

I thought it might be the steering column switch but garage said it is usually the relay and on occasions the pump.

Cheers,

Mark

JohnnyC,

It could still be the relay rather than anything clogging the jets up. Mine were exactly like that - you could use them fine once or twice, then try again and they wouldn't work. The new relay has cured it completely.

Cheers/John
