Headlamp Washers

The first test is to ensure that voltage is actually reaching the pump. If not then this indicates underlying electrical issues and you would be well advised to check the relay. If voltage is fine then it is quite likely that the pump has gone. I found that my pump had completely corroded inside it's "protective" plastic case.
The thorough DIY enthusiast would now jack up the car remove the wheel and empty the washer fluid tank before removing the old pump but being lazy I just pulled it out and let the contents leak out and onto the drive. Whether or not this was sensible is a matter for debate but it doesn't appear to have caused any problems. It is also possible to insert a small screw driver into the hole to keep the fluid in or to have somebody else put their thump over it.
The elctrical connection for the new pump is different from the existing one (unless you have a late 1996 or later 993). Not wanting to have to work in the confined space of the nearside wing, I decided not to update this. Instead I opened up the new pump casing and put the new pump motor into the old casing - sealing with PTFE tape to keep liquids out. You can then use the existing elecrical fitting.
I imagine that the process would be identical for the headlamp pump. Hope this is of use to someone.

Hi,ORIGINAL: Guards Red
Pretty easy. If when you open the engine lid you're looking at an aluminium intake manifold, you have varioram. If however the intake is black plastic, it's pre vario. I think at '96, yours will be varioram. It's useful to make sure it works however. Sit in the car, open a window and turn the ignition on. You should hear a loud "click". If not, your varioram needs a look at.
I have just purchased a 1997 993 S. I know mine is Varioram but I thought I'd make the 'Click' check you detailed. When I turn on the ignition I don't seem to hear a 'click' but there definately is a 'sound' like something being actioned in the engine compartment. Is the sound specifically a 'click'?
I don't know if it matters but I have noticed that the 'induction hose' is kinked and therefore may be preventing the Varioram from working correctly, however as I have just bought the 911 I don't have any comparisons to make. I am having the hose looked at on Thursday and having the car serviced soon so this will be resolved if it is an issue.
I would be interested to know though, what should the pull of the engine feel like when the Varioram kicks in?

I only drove 1 non-varioram car in my travels to find my car, and it was far too early in my search - I was too nervous to press the pedal that hard!
However, my reading is that the non-v and v cars are very similar at high revs, but that the varioram gives you more power at lower revs.
I'm certainly very used to my car having amazing amounts of pull low down the rev range - it's so easy to over take at 2-3k RPM!

(how did this thread get from "headlamp washers" to varioram?)

Hi, thanks for the info.(how did this thread get from "headlamp washers" to varioram?)
Apologies for hi-jacking the thread. I was interested in something 'Guards Red' said regarding listening for a clicking sound when the ignition is turned on to denote the Varioram system was being initiated (I assume initiated is the correct term here). I was going to start a new thread but then the relationship to the relative message would have been lost.
they get a wipe once a week on my way past and that keeps them clean enough.
In my opinion this is the best option - if you have a good look round at everything regularly, then who needs headlamp washers?[][] (unless it's really dirty on the road[]). Nice to have them working, though, of course.

When the windscreen washers stopped working on the 924S,I used my battery charger directly onto the pump terminals to confirm the pump motor was OK,The problem was the one way valves-yours sounds like a wiring connector somewhere-try running a separate wire from near the switch directly to the pump.

Earlier this year I had problems with my washer. Someone then told me what they thought the Route Cause could be.ORIGINAL: jboult
I've just noticed that the headlamp washer jets are not working on either side of the car (windscreen jets are Ok).
Before I start fumbling around, does anyone know of any 'usual suspects' I should be checking out? Thanks in advance.
Cheers/John
If your car has been serviced by a PC they will have added Porsche windscreen washer fluid. Of course when the washer tank runs low I top up with water and a non Porsche fluid. Well the two washer fluid products do not mix and form a Jelly type substance![:-]
Thus in the end after a few re-fills the whole system becomes gummed up. I had to have my Washer tank removed, cleaned and a new
washer pump (pump only £20.00) fitted.

Can the washer jets be changed with the bumper in situ as I want renew a damaged one?

Yes they have a lug either side which needs to be pushed in as you ease the nozzle out. The fluid tube restricts the movement a little. They are quite expensive (£20 each) and I seem to recall they are handed so you need to ensure you order the correct side. HTH

Yep, easily done and makes sense when you have new ones to look at.
I changed the relay for the old one and that worked as well,so now I have two relays......
I have run the washers for a little while to get the system flushed as it were but I think the root cause of the problem is lack of use and too much soap in the system.
