headlight beep

is my S2 supposed to have a 'beep' when I leave the headlights on and open the door? - because it doesnt.
Also, I noticed there is a sensor under the seat for what I imagine is a seatbelt warning, is it supposed to have a light for this too?

No beep, seatbelt light is a yes through. Light is on LH dose of dash near fuel gauge I think....

Seat belt light is not very sphisticated I don't think there is a seat sensor. Just a switch inside the clasp that extinguishes the dash light.

It's been mentioned before that having the pods up is a pretty good reminder that the lights are on ;)

haha, yes. I dont have a problem with remembering to turn them off when the pods are up. But when its just dull and I've been using my sidelights I often forget as the pods stay down.

after a little thinking (and a glass of wine) I've come up with this..

basically, a relay is opened by 12v from the ignition, so when ignition is on relay is open.

the other 2 pins are connected to the sidelights and a buzzer.

So when ignition is on and headlights are on, relay is open. No buzz. When ignition is off and headlights are forgotten, the switch clozes and connects the headlight 12v to the buzzer.

My other idea was to connect the earth from buzzer into the door open switch earth, so will only beep when door is opened... but not sure quite which way round the door switch operates.

Yeah it's a simple enough circuit alright. Most buzzers usually aftermarkets for this age of car use this kind of arrangement. I am sure they are available for what you could get the parts for and postage. Now if you could do one that only operates when the engine isn't running then that would be a little better [;)]

I was going to add a lights on buzzer to my MK1 Golf, can be done with a buzzer relay from a Seat and a bit of wiring, so guess would be easy on any car

I'm pretty sure that only works when the engine is switched off.. when the coil is energised from the switched ignition it breaks the contact between sidelights and buzzer. if the lights are on and ignition off 12v is supplied to the buzzer.

I think on early cars the pods come up when your only on sidelights, later cars they stay down.

my slightly revised version, works the same as described except only sounds buzzer when door is opened.

so...

ign off, lights on, door open = buzzer on
ign on, lights on, door open = buzzer off
ign off, lights off, door open = buzzer off
ign off, lights on, door closed = buzzer off

think i'll atempt this in the morning, got a few spare relays.. so will just pick up a cheap buzzer from maplin -

cheap 12v buzzer

My USA car "Chimes" if you leave the lights on and open the door - Leave the key in and open the door - Chimes and puts the seatbelt light on for 6 seconds then stops when it times out or you put the belt on. Of course it will do all this as well if you open the boot or passenger door as its all tied into the interior light. Ahh God Bless America [:D]

The drivers door switch is a 2 pole affair 968-613-601-00 if I am not mistaken

A simpler lights-on buzzer simply has a buzzer and relay connected in series between the ignition live and sidelight wire. If the sidelights are on and the ignition off, the buzzer sounds. The diode is there to ensure that it only works that way 'round (i.e ignition on and sidelights off doesn't make it buzz.)

Oli.
