heater/temp control

Hi - can someone please advise of what this could be. When you set the temp control at a certain level (say warm, it will then start to blow cold after a while. The car has a/c which works (i.e blows very cold) but it only seems to like to hold very cold or very hot. The temp sensor does not have any fluff blocking it and the little fan behind it works - All ideas appreciated. Slowly going mad!

I had the same problem a few years ago. Turned out to be a faulty temperature sensor. Replaced it and works fine now.

i think it is the one within the cc - I cant see it on the PET though to order one, anyone help?

The interior sensor is indeed in front of the little fan inside the HVAC unit.
The sensor is not available separately.
With a Bosch hammer or the PST2, you can find the problem in no time.
Sometimes it is far easier that way than to search yourself for 3 weeks.[&o]

If you can't find someone to repair it, you can get a new (£££) unit from Porsche, but also an exchange unit.
Still, you better do some tests first, just to be sure what the cause is.

I have to turn mine up full to get any warmth then when I can feel the heat turn it down to the setting required. I'm not sure why either!

Just before anyone goes off ordering new heater control units, isn't there another temperature sensor, in the plastic down pipe which leads from the heater fan in the engine bay ? Might be worth checking that too, although I agree it's more likely to be the one in the cabin. When mine died it made the fan pulse annoyingly. It's only a couple of quid for a new one though, so might be worth replacing it anyway.

There is definitely one in the plastic pipe which connects the engine bay heater fan to the heat exchangers. Mine died a couple of years ago - replacement was easy and relatvely cheap.

thats good news, I think. Any info on part number would be appreciated. Did this cause the same issues (unstable temp?)

No not really. The engine heater fan used to pulse on and off- that was about it. There was no shortage of hot air in the cabin. You need to take it to a specialist near you who you can trust. I took mine to Steve Bull - there's not much they don't know about 911 heating systems. They will test it and give you the definitive answer - could save you £££s in the long run. Is there a specialist near you ?

ok thanks, will do. I have managed to pick up a secondhand CC unit, which I may try first. As it was for my car (LHD) I could not resist

The symptoms you describe sound remarkably normal. Are you sure that there is actually something wrong with your system? The system is well known for not being able to maintain a constant temperature. I constantly have to readjust the temp control to remain comfortable, and as you describe it will automatically switch from blowing hot to cold.

I have heard of people relocating the temperature sensor outside of the dashboard control unit. Can't remember where i saw the reference, may have been on Rennlist.

no I am not sure to be honest but on a long trip the other day it seemed v odd, always turning it up and down. I probably need to take it to a specialist to look at, they are all a distance from me and the whole dropping it off, picking it up thing just drives me crazy. The car does adjust hot and cold but sometimes the middle setting is cold, sometimes warm. Another weird thing is if you use both snowflakes then it blows very hard.
