Heigo cages anyone dealt with them before?

[:D] So it's cage out time to make the car safer.....yes would rather have a sore head or knee as opposed to being crushed and killed...so Simon it's a no brainer...[;)] Bought this angle Grinder......

Dont want to get involved in the for/against cages argument (I have been injured by a cage in a Ginetta G4 on the road and saved by a cage in a Caterham 7 on the track) but I wanted to point out that the MOT test doesn't strictly check if your car is road legal, its a check of whether its safe to drive on the road..

For example its illegal to have the front windows of you car tinted above 78% (BMW and Mondeo front windows are 80%), however this isnt part of the MOT test.. There are a lot of other rules which are not part of the test, but are covered by the law.. race numbers are illegal unless struck through with black tape but are not covered by the MOT

There are rules about harnesses on the road, and I believe twist-lock buckles are not allowed, however are potentially FIA approved to a higher standard than the CE/Kite/TUV roading requirements; this is why 5 and 6 point harnesses are restricted.

These harnesses are not supposed to be used (all road harnesses have the standard type buckles) however common sense says there's nothing wrong with them in terms of performance/integrity.. This is not covered by the MOT test; the requirements of the test are purely down to condition of the straps, mountings and operation..

PS.. This thread is of interest to me as I am also considering a rear cage, so more info on Heigo (and alternatives) please!..

PPS.. Are there any alternatives which bolt in directly without modification or additional mounting points?

I spoke with someone today regarding Heigo cages, and it appears they do a direct bolt in rear roll bar which mounts to the lower front belt mounting points, the rear outer belt mounting points, and as an option has braces from the vertical hoop to the inner rear belt mounts on the trans tunnel. There is also an option for a seatbelt mounting bar
The bar Im looking at has all of the above and comes in around the 600eur mark. I have been put onto a UK agent/stockist for these bars, and the details are below

Delivery is currently 2 months from receipt of order for the 964 items

Ben,
A friend of mine has exactly this cage on order through Power Marques, might be worth seeing if you can piggy-back onto the order. Presumably if Heigo have to jig-up to do a 964 cage then it would make sense to do more than one at a time. You may find you get it a bit quicker than two months (which I believe is pretty optimistic anyway !)

Lee, have you seen the front cage on a 97?...the front section bars are huge...see piccy for thickness...

Full or front cage is not a problem on the road if you are wearing a 6 point harness, you are not exactly going anywhere!....certainly not the best idea with just a seatbelt and no helmet.

Paul.....believe me, I really did want a full cage and ordered one from new. My car has the pre cut holes in the carpet ready and waiting.

Problem is as Simon says........I am in no doubt that for road us it's bonkers...........but looks the nuts.

And that's the trouble with me.......it's always form over function.

Thanks Jamie.. Im thinking of ordering in the new year as Im going to blow some of my xmas bonus on it, so until then I hadn't better.. I already have a new carpet set and pair of harnesses Im hiding from the mrs; I better wait until they're fitted to the car (and hence invisible to her) before ordering anything else [:D]

Seen the 997GT3 RS Front Cage for the fist time, it's huge and IN your face unlike the 996 GT3RS looks great and awesome but can share the trepidation for road use.....still stick to my simple Full Cage for 964/993/GT3 996 road and track use, but that 997 Cage.....

Des, don't forget the roof bar on the 997 bolt in cage...the rhd version is fitted with a lhd roof bar which offers protection to the passenger rather than the driver....very chivalrous [:D]

Yes a major design fault, not protecting the driver, interestingly would this leave Porsche open for a big compensation claim, seriously I think yes. If you are going to play with serious roll cage protection then you should provide the RHD equivalent.

Anyway Clubsport what are you doing at home on MILF Night at your local...[;)]

I ordered a Heigo half cage with harness bar through FVD a couple of years ago. Delivery took about 2 months, but everything was complete and correct, and it fitted into the RS like a glove. The harness bar must be ordered at the same time, as flanges are welded to the cage to accommodate it.

As far as I know, only Schroth manufacture 6 point harnesses that are both FIA homogolated and road legal (ie. have "ECE" approval). I think they have two models of 4 point harness that are both FIA and ECE certified, but both can incorporate crutch straps to make them 5/6 point.
