Welcome Mark, there's been quite a few new 944 owners here recently so there are a few threads that cover most things. 944's are addictive, every one should have at least one (well it'd certainly push up the values if they did!).

Just registered, looking to pick up a nice 944 to use as a weekend toy and on track days.

Just off to read all the stickys but just thought i'd say hi first :)

Welcome to the Forum! As Peter said, almost every topic has been covered here over the last 6 months or so, set the filter to show posts over a year and settle in for a good evening's reading!
 
Thanks for all the welcomes guys. Certainly seems to be plenty of info about, think i'll need to get a cup of tea and get reading! Seems to be a glut of 944's on the market just now, but i really have zero knowledge off the car and am wary of Porsche's being expensive to fix so really don't want to get my fingers burnt. Have wanted one ever since i was about 8 years old and i bought a model of a red one whilst on holiday, ever since then i have wanted one :), black, white or grey ideally. Hopefully it will compliment the daily runner. Had some sporty cars in the past (MR2 Roadster, VX220 etc) Now driving an RX8, but there is something that keeps telling me to get that 944! - esp looking forward to taking one on track - if i can find the right one. Again, thanks for your warm welcomes. Mark :)
 
Hi Mark, Just remember that most will be 20 years old at least so you need to find one that has been looked after properly. For example, anything with original shocks is going to feel decidedly rubbish in the handling department, especially if you have experienced some fairly modern sporty types. Once everything is renewed they are fantastic cars to drive and hard to imagine they were first built in the '80s Any idea which model you want - 2.5 Lux, 2.7 Lux, 2.5 S, 3.0 S2, 2.5 Turbo, 3.0 S2 Cabrio, 2.5 Turbo Cabrio and what sort of budget were you thinking of? With cars this age the price range can be enormous depending on condition, for example you can pick up a very rough moneypit of a Turbo for circa Ă‚ÂŁ2k and at the other end of the spectrum in the past few months a member on here sold one with a rebuilt and modified engine for over Ă‚ÂŁ12k
 
I was in a similar situation 6 months ago,Ive always wanted a 944 but didnt know which to buy.I too have had a few sporty cars both new and old(renault 5 turbo,golf gti mk 1,2,3 to name a few).I ended up buying a S2 with 95000 miles on the clock backed up with tax discs, mot's and a full porsche service history up untill 67000 miles with only 28000 miles covered in the last 8 years.I knew when I bought it that I would probably have to throw a couple of grand into it to get what I wanted(no modifications just fighting fit)and I paid 3400 for it.Now that was money well spent, what a car !! Unfortunatly my wife can see where I am going with this little beauty.The more I look at her with those perfect lines(not the wife)the more I appreciate what a fine piece of work she is.
 
Hi Mark, You need to add you're location to your profile, but I'm sure there are owners near you who would be glad to help. One of the real benefits of this Club or Tipec is the huge regional network of enthusiasts. One bit of advice, don't buy a car yet! Do the research, I am serious about trawling through the last year or so on this forum. Also have a look at the Tipec 944 forum, less posts but also a lot of useful advice. Get to some events, meet the guys who've been around the cars for years and suck up the experience. Bought well, and maintained well, I'd think that a 944 would be a great car after running an RX8. To me the concept of a RWD 2+2 is very similar, but the engines are polar opposites. I haven't driven an RX8, but I'd guess that a decent lux would seem more driveable with it's torque, and an S2 or Turbo would be a revelation with both power and low-down grunt. One thing's certain, the 944 will use less oil! [:eek:]
 
Thanks for all the info guys! I fear i am far away from most of you, I'm all the way up in sunny Dundee - i sometimes see a red 944 but other than that they are pretty rare - there is a nice white one with blue wheel which i see up at Knockhill a lot - truth be told it was that one that jump started me to get serious about getting a 944 as a track / weekend car :) I love my RX8 and don't think i will ever sell it (not that its worth much now these days anyway!) but i think the 2 car garage of the RX and 944 would be ideal for my needs. I have read a few buyers guides now, i was initially thinking of an S2, working on the basis that it would be the most sorted of them (being the later edition). However the more i read i think that the 2.5 LUX would serve me just as well - spirited road and track driving - and potentially cheaper to run and maintain - as it does not have the tensioner issue? There is a white one for sale close to me in Perth which i'll try and go and see today: http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/678480.htm I'm ashamed to admit it, but as off yet i haven't actually driven one so hopefully get a test drive in this one [:(] As i'd be tracking it i would initially look to update the suspension and brakes but other than that i'd try to keep as standard as possible - mind you i say that about all my cars but it never holds true! Ok, off to read a few more guides and see whats what - thanks so much again for all the help and info, it is very much appreciated [:)] EDIT: Oh, btw sc0tty, that 944 looks great!
 
Hope the viewing goes well, it's certainly in the right colour [:D] The Lux makes a great track car, just throw some Turbo arb's at it, good tyres and some nice pads/fluid and you're ready.
 
Well, i did deal yesterday on an 83 model 944 in Dark Green, mechanically the car is perfect, with the only down side being the paint works a bit tatty and there's a few cracks in the Dashboard - but they all suffer from that :) The guy selling was a real enthusiast and a great guy, and had really looked after the car. I'm pleased as punch, thats one boyhood dream realised :) - even got one trackday left in November before the seasons over! Finally, thanks for all the advice and excellent stickies on this site, it made buying a 944 a lot easier. Thanks again! Mark.
 
83 model - that'll be a 2.5 Lux, I'm guessing. I can't confirm (as I have never owned one!) but it strikes me that the Lux's will be much cheaper to run than the later S2's and Turbos. They have much simpler brakes which need less maintenance, and don't have the rust problems because they have properly-designed bodywork. AND yours is an early one, so will be square-dash (guessing so at any rate), so will be lighter. Several people claim that the early lux's are the best ones to drive as they are lighter on the road ... Either way, enjoy it! Good to have you here. Early poverty spec cars are best; theyre lighter and crisper. Theyre all suffering with rust in the sill area now though.

That'll be at Knockhill then I guess. One of my favourite tracks ever, maybe because it was my first, but it is a little cracker.
 
Checked all the sills and there was no sign of rust at all - has been garaged most of its life and very well maintained. Yeah Trackdays will primarily be at Knockhill, its small but technical and i love the drop into the first corner :)
 
I haven't driven it for some time and I think it has been changed slightly, but my favourite bit is the blind crest/chicane (Railway?). I got a massive tankslapper on there in a 911 once, and I spun a Renault 5 GTT onto the grass as well, but I still like that bit. That said the drop into Duffus is cool also - just don't think of Gabrielle Tarquini (I was there when he rolled).
 
Yeah that's the one Red, hopefully the car will be ready to go by then - if you are on track might be wise to give the green 944 a wide berth as i'll just be learning the car ;)
