Hello. If its a 1987 then its a series two car. The S in S2 stands for Super, not series... [;)]

thanks for the welcome, i thought the s2 had the 2.7/3.0ltr engines and the s1 was the 2.5? i see i have a lot to learn [:)] JuvUK

Erm, yes, but he never said it was a "Series 1". It sounds to me like an "S" (or, as he calls it, an "S1" as opposed to the "S2"). The S2 came to the UK in 1989, I think, so as a 1987 model it may be a Series 2, but will be an "S". Oli. ETA: Juv - the "S" is a 2.5 16v, the "S2" is a 3.0 16v. The only 2.7 was a late-model "Lux" which was produced for a year or so - and all Lux's had 8v heads. All turbos are 8v 2.5's as well (unless someone's been tinkering with them.)

The series one cars were built between 1981 and August 1985. Series two cars were built from September 1985. for the 1986 model year, onwards. The 1989 model year-only 2.7 litre had an eight valve cylinder head and an original-type body. The S2 had a 16v cylinder head and a longer stroke to increase the capacity to 3.0 litres and a Turbo-style body, along with 220bhp model brakes and suspension. Both of these models shared a similar bottom end design, which differed from that of the 1981-1988 normally aspirated cars (the Turbo remained unchanged). The design of the S2s cylinder head was essentially similar to that in the 1987-1988 2.5 litre 944S, adapted to the later block.

You know very well that it is a common mistake to refer to pre-S2 cars as S1 or series one. You seem to want to correct me, so I will return the favour by pointing out that 'Lux' is not a model, it is a trim level.

Hi,
Just thought I'd take a few moments out to say hello so....."hello"
I've just bought my 1st Porsche, it's an 87 silver S1 944 with teledials, 181k on the clock, FSH with recent cam belts, water pump, clutch and shocks.
I work for Ferrari but don't let that put you off talking to me. Interests include retro computing, cars and F1.

cheers, JuvUK

Whoah there Simon! Not trying to pick a fight. Reign in your horses. I'm not trying to correct anyone. S2 is a model, so I'm not quite sure what you mean by "pre-S2". Thanks for the information about the "Lux" designation. I thought it was model, not a trim level. As Mr C used to say, "Every day is a school day". Oli.

whoooaaaa guys, i just joined up and said hello, hoping this would be a friendly forum, i hope it's not all bickering and point scoring? cheers, JuvUK

It's not. It's a friendly forum, and I apologise for my contribution to this rather poor first impression. Be welcome. 'Tis a good place to be. Oli.

Hi JuvUK... welcome to the forum and I congratulate you on choosing a fine car , enjoy and have fun...[8D] Pete

Simon, not wishing to cut across your knowledge base, but were not some 944S's fitted with the M44.40 engines? Which I belive were also 16. The S2 on the other hand had the M44.41 16v engine, the difference between being in the cubic capacity. Fogive my ignorance if I am wrong, it was just something I had read somewhere .... Stu

hi and welcome, got a 88 lux meself, sweet cars :) does seem to be an outburst of pedantry right here but its not usually like that. most questions ive asked have been answered in a friendly manner. also worht looking at the tipec forum (www.tipec.net) if you havent already done so.

Hello Stu. The S - M44/40 had a 100mm bore, shared with all of the other 2.5 litre cars; and the S2 - M44/41 had a 104mm 2.7 litre-derived (if you will) bore.

Simon, Thanks, I was aware they were the same bore, different outputs the S having a 188 bhp, which I thought was by the addition of a 16v head with a 10.9:1 compression ratio the same as the S2, albeit they have different part numbers... LOL Would have been a lot easier if they had stuck to the conventional Mk1, Mk2 etc's would have solved much confusion .....Thanks again. Stu

Simon and Oli are both knowledgeable contributers here (apparently[:D]), even if sometimes wires are crossed. Just dont mention oil, and you'll be ok....[;)] Edd

.... and post pictures of rusty sills (not mis-spelling them 'cills'), agree that red ones are faster, acknowledge the respectable insanity of Mr Empson and recognise the inherent superiority of the S2 over all other models (sorry Simon, 'trim levels') of 944 ... ... then you'll fit in just fine! (For extra brownie points you need to proclaim that the 944 has never been equalled, let alone bettered by Porsche, but that's probably why you bought one in the first place, eh?) Oli.
