Help. Bodyshop needed!

I am in real trouble. As if the damage to my wheelarch isn't bad enough, some local toe rags have keyed my car! So now I have a nice line across the engine cover and down the driver's side. I am not sure whether to be pleased that it is on the same side as the "plier" damage or not.

Anyway, to cut a long story short, I am going to get the car completely repainted. There starts the problems. I am off to Australia in the middle of January and intended to ship the car before Christmas. So that plan has gone. The bodyshop I would like to get the work done at is quoting getting it finished for the end of February. That would mean being without a car for 4 months in Oz and I would have to buy a banger as a run around.

So, has anybody got recommendations of bodyshops I could use. I need to make decisions as to what i am going to do quickly so any "steers" would be welcomed.

To some extent, part of the country doesn't matter. I live in London but distance isn't a barrier. One of my "prefered" bodyshops is "way oop north"!

Both my son and I have used a body shop just out side Scunthorpe, to say they are good is a under statement

Voted one of the UK's top 20 Body shops by Max Power, I can not recommend this company highly enough.FANTASTIC QUALITY WORK

Hi Simon

You could try Autofarm, as they have many years of experience in restoring Porsche cars.

My (RHD) RS went in last year to have a few improvements and the way they handled the project was by far the best experience I have had when it comes to mechanics working on a car.

Mikey in their bodyshop showed me an example of an RS that had sustained massive front end damage (LHD, obviously inferior driving position) which they rebuilt and it looked perfect.

I highly recommend them, and am not on commission [:D]

Cheers

Ollie

Sorry to hear that Simon, I can recommend Chris Carty at 911 Bodyshop in Wembley, not the best premises but the quality of work is very good.

Hi Simon

I had some paintwork done on my car during the summer and can recommend two places:

1. Chris @ 911 Bodyshop in Wembley 020 89000572
2. Karl @ Specialised paintworks in Reading 0118 9306206

Both offer excellent workmanship and customer service/back up are superb. I have used both and been very happy. If you want my detailed opinions on the two and a comparison, feel free to give me a bell.

Hope you are well.

Speak to James Wilkinson P3 based in SE LONDON 0208 853 4799 or 07939810344...............He is very efficent and can be quick and good work, he is also an Aston Martin paintshop.......

OK, guys. I see a bit of a pattern here. Besides my friends up north, I have now had very good reports about 911 Bodyshop and Specialised. Seems I am going for a drive tomorrow!

Many thanks to all.

Sorry to hear about the problems, I've had excellent results from both Gantspeed and Selby's of Nottingham who are the factory approved 'shop round there.

They do have good bodyshops in Oz and long distance shipping can be a risk at the best of times, I don't know where your going in Oz but have you considered getting recommendations from the local club and having the work done over there - at least your on the spot to oversee what's done.

By the way - any final thoughts on the Marongoni's before you go?

Tony

Simon,
I happened to be over at 911 Bodyshop last week, and Cris seemed fairly busy, but he can be pretty flexible. From my own experience his timing estimates need to be taken with a pinch of salt, but the quality of the work is excellent. But be prepared to pay up for it, he is not cheap. Then again with most things Porsche-related, you get what you pay for. I would happily use him again.

Jamie

ps I emailed you a couple of weeks ago about the Marangoni Zeta Lineas you're using. I need to put a set of road tyres on my spare wheels and was minded to give them a try out - any strong views either way a couple of months down the line.

edited to say, well how about that, Tony and I ask the same question at the same time !!

A 964 mate Pip Smith took his 964 to Oz with him, he has since had his engine rebuilt and a front end spray much much cheaper than in the UK. (he was also told that the previous engine build work was shoddy... OPC ! )
maybe wait till it is in Oz ??
Will the dockers scratch it enroute ?

Not sure about OZ but it is worth finding out about quality and cost over there.
I am sure oz is not that much different to NZ ie labour rate about £15.00 per hour and classic cars being shipped out there for restoration.

Thanks again, guys. I am making a round trip tomorrow of a few bodyshops and will report back!

As for doing it in Oz, I would look at that option except for not getting any insurance money! They won't pay me unless the work is done here. Although there is a chance of damage on the way to Oz, the shippers I am using have a great reputation and the independent agent I am using in Oz says that he has never had a car damaged during shipping with this particular shipper so I hope that is a good sign.

Simon, re shipping your car. A little tip from a retired Marine Surveyor. Do not hand your car over to a freight forwarding company for shipment - therein lies the biggest risk of damage, because it will be handled several times.Much better to book shipment direct with a Shipping Line (by all means using an Agent) and ordering a 20 foot container (ie FCL terms). You can then arrange "stuffing" and securing of your precious car yourself , with obvious benefit.
Give me a call on 01394 278400 if you require more info.

Good advice, we shipped a sail boat from US to Southampton it went all over the world and they caused damage of over 30K which we never recovered[]

Simon, speak to Lee about this, his the fussiest paint bloke in the world.

I would have concerns with buying any fully painted car and in particular an RS.

Regards

Paul

While I hear your concerns, I have taken advice from Paul at GT Classics who advised me that if I have a full photographic record of what is wrong and why it is haveing a full respray, it won't, in his opinion, effect the value. My view is that if an owner can show that thereason for a respray is not due to crash damage, I cannot think of a reason for concern. The damage to my car is well known and will be properly documented.

The real problem is that every paint shop I have spoken to says that without a full respray, after a summer in the Aussie sun, the clour change will mak ethe car look like Joseph's coat! This is because of the red colour and the fact that the type of paint used originally is no longer allowed to be used. This almost guarantees different rates of fade.

An interesting point that has come out of this is that from now on, any paintwork on a red 964 (or earlier) will almost certainly be noticable within a year or two. I believe that the 993's were clear coated so this won't be a problem on them and later cars.
