Oh no...I saw this the other day for sale and I cannot help but keep looking at it!!..I am faithful to my 997 GT3, but this Turbo keeps waggling its bottom at me and teasing me!..I have a recurring dream that a 997 Turbo in pimped up white following a visit to DMS to gather 550 bhp & a decent exhaust is the way to go...No No No I shall not listen, I love you my GT3,nothing goes or sounds like you...Im going mad..go away white turbo I hate you...HELP!

Help I am being seduced by a turbo Pic

All I can say Chris is dont do it. I was seduced by a Turbo and if I am honest I regret it and wish I went for the GT3 for the more involving driving experience and a decent amount of noise for less money. The Turbo is very quick but bland as a driving experience more GT than sports. I hate to admit it but I miss my C2S with PSE. Even worse I think Mr Yves may even be right going down the X50 route. Ouch.
You have the best car of all as the GT3 is sporty without being too harsh unlike previous GT3's. My wife thinks the Turbo is the best 911 we have had as it is "comfortable". I may have one go at improving the car by putting a sports exhaust on it but I hate the thought of non porsche parts giving rise to a warranty hassle on a £100k car

Chris,
You categorically, definately, absolutely, without a shadow of a doubt do not want a white turbo.
Now, a Basalt Black one, thats a different matter !
Hope this helps
Yves
Chris I concur with Yves - Bassalt Black. "Come to the dark side" get a DMS Tuned 600hp Bassalt Black Turbo with proper exhaust and tweaked handling - with Red stiching inside......... hmmmmmm
Although white is nice[:-]
Nah, the Rinspeed 997 Turbo on the other hand...
Yes please!!!

Thanks Chaps, all very good input indeed. I am going for a spin in the Turbo today, hopefully this will put my mind at rest that in my GT3 I have the best car for me...heres hoping!
Do agree with the Miami Vice thing also, but will be interested to see the car in person to see if it really is OTT or if it carrys the colours well.
Also agree about the noise and driving experience of the GT3 is superior to the turbo for the type of driving I do ie not everyday but an occasional blast.
So time to step upto the plate and face the turbo demons at midday today, like I say hopefully the turbo will be too pimped up for me and not move me like the GT3 does....we shall see!

I agree with your comments Bob, so does my wife[]
GT3 is always going to be the more involving drive and if your planning on track days a plenty then its the right choice.
Everyday quick car, A, B roads and continental GT touring then I'm not so sure...
The exhaust system... I was talking to the guy at the OPC this week and he said that if the replacement system was CE approved then there was really no issues, however he suggested to check with your local service manager and find their "approval" first.
They have had Turbos leaving the OPC as new with alternative exhaust systems fitted.... prior to this information I felt the very same as yourself with the warranty issues.

Gary,
Excuse my ignornace but what does CE approved mean?
Has anyone fitted an aftermarket exhaust (and/or ECU mod) and told their insuarnce company? I would be interested to know how much the premium went up. Being a bit of a whimp I wouldnt sleepat night if I though I wasnt insured so would have to tell my insurer about the mods. Chris's post got me thinking. I live on the south coast I could easily pop into DMS!!
Come on Chris put us out of our misery was this a idle fling with a pimped up flirt or a real relationship about to start?

I know we are going off on a tangent here, but with regards to DMS - how do they compare to companies such as Ruf?
Outside of the UK I haven't seen anyone with DMS remapped ECUs and exhausts. Everyone else goes for tuners such as:

Bob, its European approval.... think German

I know of a couple of Turbo owners with "different" exhausts fitted, hopefully they will answer the question for us both.

BTW - From what those in the know had said, the Cargraphic exhaust developed in conjuntion with RS Tuning is the best 997 Turbo exhaust out there right now. It adds about 21bhp and 20Nm torque.

There are also a few guys with videos on YouTube eg: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-YFYuVyeemM

As for ECU changes - the verdict is still out on that, with the suggestion that the longer you wait, the higher quality the tuning kits will be.

You must tell your insurers about any change to the vehicle, particularly one that increases power. If you claim and deny a mod later on thats fraud, plain and simple.
There is nothing to be concerned about anyway, Ive done quite a bit of fiddling with my cars over the last few years and the premiums have hardly gone up at all in reality.

So if I were to go with something non-Porsche then I would be very sure they REALLY know what they are doing.
Alex,
DMS do stuff all over Europe plus other parts of the world. They did my 120d and that is bonkers !
I am intrigued by this 'Cargraphic' outfit. They cant be too bad as Parr are the official UK outlet and we know of their reputation.
It was a Cargraphic upgrade that Parr quoted me on for the X51 400BHP + Upgrade. I know they are German but what else do we know ?

Gosh I go away for a bit come back and my threads been hijacked!.
Anyway back to the point, seduction over, 997TT not for me, lets just put it down to a quick flirt. Went out in the turbo and I couldnt believe how easy & light it was to drive compared to the GT3. The GT3 is so much more alive, the gearchange the steering feel, even the seating position ( lot lower ). I also very much prefer the linear power delivery of the GT3, it just pulls & pulls right through, the turbo seems to slingshot forward at 4k + on a wave which is rather pleasant though!.
And the noise, oh the glorious noise that starts at 4k and goes all the way to 8k, absolutley fantastic.
For me the TT just feels somewhat sterile in comparision, If Im honest I do prefer the looks of the TT, but literally everything else is better for me in the GT3.
Its unfortunate for turbo owners that many cannot get to have a drive in a gt3, as there are so few available for test drives, because I really do think many TT owners would get hooked on the GT3...I have to say I think its the best 911 I have ever driven, so Im keeping her!.

Sorry about the Hijack but your conclusion was what I suspected. If you love the GT3 the Turbo will seem a little bland. I ordered a Turbo before it was known how good the new GT3 is. In the past GT3's have tended to be great track cars but a little harsh for most tastes on the road and I thought 997 GT3 was going to be the same (Doh) Current model seems to be very good at both road and track. I think current GT3 will turn out to be a real classic whilst Turbo just recognised as good car that is very quick.
On the insurance issue I did speak to A Manning this morning who were very helpful as usual. No premium increase for just fitting a sports exhaust such as a Tubi. If you go down the DMS (or similar) route of chipping the car for say a 15% increase in power then premium up by 20%.
I would be very interested in hearing from anyone who has modified their ECU. What has their experience been and have they ever regretted it. Clearly guys who have gone down the X50 route have been delighted (Cue Mr Yves)
