Help with noise on startup please

Hi all,

I'm getting this noise on startup. Increases and decreases with engine revs. Then fine while cruising but sometimes comes back. If i drop a gear it goes again. Please have a listen and see what you think. Cam belt was done anout 3 months ago. Waterpump done about 55000 miles ago in 1998. Now on 130000. Car seems to be running a little bit hotter but it was warm outside. Not overheating or losing water.

Suggestions so far are waterpump or alternator or power steering belt. Please have a listen and see what you think.. Will be a while before I can look at it properly.

Hi,

disconnect the Power Steering/Alternator belt and see if It makes any noises, just a case of eliminating areas etc
I watched the video, could you do another with the bonnet open and film inside the engine bay

Thanks Alan, Will try and post another video but car is in garage a few miles away. Will be a while before I am there again.

It doesn't seem to change with engine revs - is that the case?

If so then there can't be many things that are causing it. Heater fan?

Oli.

I agree with Oli...doesn't seem to change with revs....as it's a Turbo I would be looking at the two radiator fans, mine has made a similar noise in the past which was one of the fan bearings.

That does sound a bit like the noise my fans were making, I have since replaced them with aftermarket ones.

Just for peace of mind - try altering the heater fan speed while its making noise as Porsche may be one where the fan is always on although very slow speed when its switched "off". IIRC this function may be related to the air sensor in the cabin what works with the climate control. I agree that it is not likely an engine accessory because it doesn't change with rpm unless...does the turbo turn "slowly" even at idle? Would/could it be turning slowly at low rpm and not be affected by a throttle blip because the low blip doesn't create enough exhaust pressure to speed the turbo up? Just grasping at straws here but remember that vulcanization was discovered by accident also :)

Def. air con pump, mine sounds the same, it usually does it for a mile or two then quiets down, it's one of those jobs to look at next week or the week after maybe [8|] or maybe not depends how loud it gets.

Thanks John! That's exactly what i wanted to hear having had cambelt done not long ago was worried at first it was the water pump. Aircon has not worked in my ownership (except for about 1 day when i had it regassed!) can i delete the pump? Seemed the pulley drove something else as well? Can't remember now. Too many belts!

The alternator is driven from the same belt. You need to relocate the alternator if you want to delete the A/C pump. There are some expensive "delete brackets" around, but I believe it is also possible to fit the alternator bracket and belt from a non-A/C 8v car to achieve the same thing.

I would be inclined to check the bearings on the alternator and A/C, when I replaced my A/C compressor (it was beyond new bearings) I checked the bearings on the Alternator while there and they were very close to failing, not surprising considering the car is 30 years old. It was an easy job to rebuild the alternator with new bearings, well worth doing while working in this area IMHO.

I'm considering doing this, already picked up a bracket off flee bay for £17.00 inc.postage so def. stay away from over priced kits.

Thanks for all the help - I just need to decide whether to delete or replace compressor now.

If I delete, how do I blank off the existing pipes from the compressor? I guess I need to take it somewhere to have the system drained first?

And are there any other bolts I need for fitting the bracket?

Still battling with this noise. New aircon compressor fitted so aircon works now but noise still there. New alternator made no difference.
A bit more info:
Start car with aircon off - no noise
Turn aircon on, noise. Then turn aircon off an the noise is there faintly.
Pop headlights up, sometimes faint noise, then turn fan on to 2 and the noise gets louder. This lead me to believe alternator bearings but new alternator made no difference.
It seems to me it is something in that belt run. is there any wear possible on the crankshaft pulley? Garage who are working on ity have not replaced belt but are sure it is not that as belt is fairly new and it does not sound like a slipping sound. Any ideas? Anyone want to buy a turbo? :) Its days are numbered..
